hi i would like help please, mary father was thomas she married wilfred pearson in doncaster 1933, she was born in 1910 i would like to find out her mothers name. my mother sylvia pearson cannot remember her granparents, so i am stuck she thinks mary was born in retford nottingham

Firstly, check which registration distict(s) you are looking for.

http://www.fhsc.org.uk/genuki/places/index.htm

Then use http://content.ancestry.co.uk/iexec/?htx=List&dbid=8964&offerid=0%3a7858%3a0 to search for every candidate.
There are going to be several. I suspect that you will have to order the certificate to get her surname, as it won't be in the index.

Did Mary have any younger siblings?  If so - and you know their birth dates - you could look for them on the second link Pauline gave you, because from 1911, the mother's maiden name is given.
