GERMANY: ERDBEER / ERDBIER, from Rostock to East End
« on: Sunday 20 August 06 12:38 UTC (UK) »

Hi There

I have just joined the forum and was wondering if anyone can help me.

My family name is ERDBEER (originally spelt ERDBIER). I have traced my Great Great Grand-father back to Rostock, now in northrn Germany.  He was registered on the 1881 census as a ship-keeper (harbour) in the St George-in the East dockyard, in East London. He is also on the 1861 census as a mariner living in Poplar. He was born in about 1824-6. There is no record of him on the 1841 or 1851 census, so I am assuming he can over to London either in his late teens or early twenties, in the 1850's.

I would like to trace him further actually in Rostock but am not sure how to proceed, as the time he left would have been during Prussian reign, and then following WW2 Rostock was part of East Germany.

Also, does anyone have any idea why so many european sailors came over at that time?

Many thanks

Can anyone help?

I have been tracing my family history and have hit a brick wall.  The name is ERDBEER but was originally spelt ERDBIER. My great great grand-father was born in Rostock in about 1824-6 and moved to London in the 1850's as a mariner/ship-keeper (harbour).  I would like to trace his life and family in former Prussia but don't know how to go about it.

does anybody know what a ship-keeper does?

does anybody know anything about the ship "Earl of Zetland", which was the ship he was registered on in 1881?

does anybody know anything about the St George-in the East dockyard, where the ship was berthed?

does anybody know how to access records in former eastern germany?

thankyou thankyou thankyou  Grin

any help no matter how small will be greatly appreciated.

http://www.genealogienetz.de/reg/MEC/mec.html - here is also some good information about the area, the archives, and what is available.

To see if there is an LDS centre near you, use www.familysearch.org  They have lots of resources on microfilm, so if there is a centre near you this is often the easiest way.

http://www.melville.org/reynolds.htm - here is a mention of 'ship keeper', which sounds like it's the sort of position you might expect - one of the crew put in charge of looking after things when the rest of the crew are away.

http://www.kolumbus.fi/jamikko/Purjelaivat_Earl%20of%20Zetland.htm - a picture and some info about the Earl of Zetland, although it's in Finnish.

http://sailing-ships.oktett.net/96.html - here's the info on her in English.

http://www.mernick.co.uk/thhol/simsstge.html - some info on the parish of St. George in the East.  The Port of London was in this area, so there would be a series of docks about although I don't know of one actually called 'St George in the East Dockyard'.

Hi Liz,

Are you still searching for your Erdbeer roots? Have we communicated before? My name is Paul Moore and my mother's name is Rose Erdbeer. My grandfather was Arthur Erdbeer, and we share the same Great Great Grandfather - John Erdbeer - born 1824 in Rostock. My GGGGG Grandfather was Gideon David Erdbeer - born 1764 in Sanitz near Rostock. His father - my GGGGGG Grandfather - was called Bogislaus or Bogislaw Erdbeer.

I lived in Germany for many years and speak German fluently.

Get in touch please

All the best,

Paul
