One of my rellies was an ag lab age 11 in Creacombe on the 1841 census and not living with his family. Does that mean that his family would have lived in the area and found a live in job for him or would he have been sent to the nearest town to be hired out?

He would probably be sent to wherever he could find an apprenticeship or job - someytimes it was local and sometimes it could be further away.  It was quite common for kids over 10 to be sent out to work. Often the family he worked for would be either relatives or friends of the family. And sometimes the friends  would become related by marriage at a later time.

I have a few workers in my family that lived with families not related at the time, but married into my family 5 or 10 years later.
