« on: Monday 21 August 06 07:25 BST (UK) »

Hi, Would someone please be able to tell me how I go about finding finding a mining death, in South Africa of an English born citizen who had immigrated to Queensland, Aust c. 1890. Would his death be registered in SA, England or Australia? Cheers Kay

Hi Ruth, Thank you for your reply, yes I have checked Naairs, can't see  anything. Details are John Clark b. 1852 ( son of Richard & Mary A) Sedgley, Stafordshire. He immigrated to Queensland in 1883 aboard the "Bulimba". Can't find him in the 1881 Census England so must have left  England by 1881. Don't know where he was for the 2 year gap. Wife Annie Elizabeth ( b. 1855), girls Elizabeth    ( 1879) & Ada (1876). His last child was born in Charters Towers, Qld, in 1892, he was working for the railway in Qld and left to go to South Africa where he was reportedly killed in an accident (think old mine)

Unfortunately, many of these miners' records - claims after death or disability or disease etc - don't even give the name of the deceased - their families may never have known what happened to them.  Sad If the death was caused by a 'sensational' accident e.g. an explosion in a mine, there are sometimes newspaper reports but searches in that sort of source are inevitably time-consuming and may not be feasible, especially if delegating to a professional.
If the miner arrived from another colony, hadn't been in SA long, and had accumulated no assets (property etc), he would therefore literally have no 'estate' and a deceased estate file would not be lodged with the Master of Supreme Court.

Hi Kay

I see on NAAIRS there are numerous references for the name John Clark (also Clarke) but the one that stuck out for me, although the Archive is not in a mining area as far as I know Huh,  was :

DEPOT     NAB
SOURCE    MSCE
REFERENCE 14/65
DESCRIPTION          CLARK, JOHN. (S/S ANN ELIZABETH).
STARTING  19020000
ENDING    19030000
REMARKS   MSC3865/1902.

Do you have any idea which mining area he went to?  How soon after he arrived did he die?  Did his family travel with him or did they remain in Qld?

Regards
Moira

Moira, well done on identifying that estate file reference and Kay, I think this is your man.  Cheesy
Checked Death Notice contents at PMB Archives and here they are:
John Clark  dod  4 Mar 1902 at Smith St Durban
Residence: Freemans House Smith St Durban
45 yrs at dod
occupation blacksmith
Australian (no specific place of birth given)
Parents unknown.
Widow Mrs J Clark Melville Street Charters Towers N Qld.
No children listed on DN
Property - yes, handed to Borough Police by Mr Burell (? illeg)
No Will.

Another doc in the file is an affidavit from the widow Anne Elizabeth Clark; says they married at Cannock Staffordshire 29 Mar 1875. They had 8 children, 3 of whom died in infancy i.e. under age of 2 years. 5 surviving children 'now all living in Queensland': their names
Ada Jones widow of Samuel Jones (dec) age 26
Elizabeth Clark spinster 23
Richard Frederick Clark 13
Martha Clark aged 10
Margaret Clark aged 9

Another doc in the intestate estate describes John Clark as 'blacksmith and fitter on Natal Govt Railways'.

No mention of any mining connection among the papers.

Mole
