Do you have a name for your Gt grandfather and a date.

There appears to be no New Village, but a Newbridge is a village
on the I.O.W.

Probably best of looking for the informant, and see where she was a fortnight after the death. Name of Mary Rackett?

The Enumerator's Schedule records this part of the Parish of Carisbrooke as "That part of the said parish comprising the New Village - BedfordRow - Bedford Place - Mall Field and Field Place."

There is an area described as 'New Village' in Freshwater, it's off Camp Road. I don't think it's what you're looking for as it was in Calbourne registration district, rather than Newport.

Hi,

In 1851 HO107/1663  f.213  p.8  Elizabeth COXHEAD age 62, and her son Alfred, age 22, are living in Clarendon St. New Village.

Part of the enumeration district (3d) is described as,

'comprising New Village, ( East of Gatcombe Road/ including Clarendon Street, and Melbourne Place, Pitts Field, Deadmans Lane / South side to Nodehill /  Bignor Place and St Johns Terrace.'

Here is a map from 1835, which shows New Village as on Castle Road, where Clarendon Street & Place, and Melbourne Street are today.

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~genmaps/genfiles/COU_files/ENG/HAM/dawson_newport_1835.html

Also searcing for Carisbrooke at http://www.old-maps.co.uk brings up a 1866 map which shows New Village at the same location Smiley

Thanks Daisy for that Link, I really enjoyed reading that item of history. Have added the story to my records.

About Deadmans Lane. Here are my connections:

Sarah Elizabeth Mursell  &  Henry William Mursell.  (Carisbrooke film  - Item 15.)

1861  Census of Newport I. of W. shows:
At Pyle Street Newport  'Horse & Groom Hotel'

Glad you enjoyed the link.

These may help narrow down where 'your' Horse & Groom was,

Directory of Hampshire and the Isle of Wight 1859
Beerhouses
COXHEAD George 82 Pyle St.

Harrod & Co's Directory of Hampshire and the Isle of Wight 1865
COXHEAD Frances Mary, Horse & Groom Inn Pyle Street

Looking at the image of the 1861 census on the next page is Thomas W FRYER, Roman Catholic Priest of the Chapel of St Thomas, this Church is at the end of Pyle St. near the junction with New Street www.stthomaschurchiow.co.uk
