Anyone able to shed some light on this little mystery? Florence Amelia Furmston was born in Vic, Australia on 23.9.1869. At some time she travelled to New Zealand and married Michael John Staunton in 1901 in Dunedin, Otago. She died in 1902. There is a birth for Cora Bessie Staunton in 1902. Perhaps this is Florence's child? She may have died in childbirth? I have looked and looked but can't find anything on Florence except reference to her marriage to John Staunton. Have looked at some passenger lists and cemetery records without success. (Still so much to learn 'bout this new interest that has occupied my every waking moment....) Curious to know name of boat Florence sailed on and if she was actually buried in New Zealand. Any input would be so appreciated. RootsChat rocks...Peggle

Whether she died there or not, it looks as if she is buried in the Hawkes Bay (North Island):

This one got me going - according to Google, Waipawa is in the Hawkes Bay - but perhaps, I thought, there was a farm, a holding or an "estate" of the same name down in Otago - the middle name also 'wrong'......

OK I thought, this one still puts him in the South Island in Otago.

Hmmm - right name - if he was a usual resident of Otago, one would have expected Probate to be lodged in Christchurch (South Island) not Wellington (north Island). sure;y? Wellington on the other hand, in those days would encompass Hawkes Bay.......

Aren't you a busy bee! I've only started to research a couple of months ago and I 'spose practise will payoff eventually! I'm so greatful for your help.
That info re. Florence Amelia Staunton is fantastic. No matter where I seemed to look she was just not popping up. Was just looking in the south island though, so that certainly gives some more to go on. Now to find her on a passage from Vic. Aus to NZ which has also been eluding me.

Now that you have a DOD for Florence, obtaining her NZ Death cert should tell you how long she had been in NZ - which may give you a narrower time frame for searching for her entry into NZ. Of course, the Death cert may have some of the information it could record, omitted - and any information is only as good as the person who provided it...they may be incorrect on some points.

Something was niggling at me re: Florence's burial place - it said "Manaia" on the listing we found on that web site:

Which link in turn I'd found at this site (A) listed as the "Central Hawkes Bay Cemeteries" which included Waipawa as one of the district's Cemeteries but not Manaia:

I now think that site (A) has a wrong link, and Florence is rather buried in Manaia Cemetery in the Taranaki area, not Hawkes Bay - this is the correct link (go in thru Services>Cemeteries):

The Hawkes Bay cemeteries which include Waipawa, is correctly here:

There are a couple oif Staunton's listed - but not Michael John!

Hi AMBLY..you are a machine! Really appreciate your efforts here. Will follow through on all that stuff in the next few days. I did come across a reference to Michael J Stauntons burial recently and dare I admit that I now can't put my finger on it! Anyway, no doubt it will reappear...and the hunt will continue.

I have a Michael J STAUNTON record of burial at the Southern Cemetery in Dunedin and it says his date of death is 8 Feb 1908 (but could be 1909 ) and burial as 10 Feb. Age is 51 years. It's possible that this is the husband of my Amelia Florence Staunton (nee Furmston) A marriage certificate copy is on its way from NZ.
Does anyone know how I can confirm the relationship between these 2 people (considering Florence died in 1902)?
