HA(R)TWELL of Brackley
« on: Wednesday 03 November 04 15:08 UTC (UK) »

Ann(e) HATWELL or HARTWELL of Brackley married George MORRIS, shoemaker,in 1825.
Does anyone else have any HATWELL connections who might have a clue as to the origins of Anne's family?
Many thanks.

 Smiley Smiley Smiley

You don't say WHAT INFORMATION YOU ALREADY HOLD, but I found on the

1871 Census RG10 281
for Islington

Ann MORRIS/Head/widow/74/Dressmaker/Brackley
Eliza MORRIS/dau/single/42/Dressmaker/Brackley

And on the IGI,  the marriage of George MORRIS & Ann HATWELL, 27 Oct 1825 in Brackley.
Also, the birth of Eliza MORRIS 11 Feb 1827, Brackley, Parents George MORRIS & Ann

I'm afraid you will have to search (or get someone to do it for you) the Parish Records for Brackley, for Ann's, birth.  This will give you her parents and you should be able to search backwards using these.

Hi Roz,

I looked in the Brackely parish registers and found that they had fallen victim to a lazy vicar! Shocked

Ann Hattwell bapt 30 July 1796

Elizabeth Hattwell bapt 14 Feb 1798

Rebecca d of Thomas & Mary Hatwell bapt 12 May 1799

John s of Thomas & Mary Hattwell bapt 8 May 1803

Martha d of Thomas & Mary Hatwell bapt 22(?) Aug 1806

As you can see the earlier entries didn't name either of the parents but it looks as though Thomas & Mary were the only couple of that surname having children on Brackley at that time.

I couldn't see a marriage for them but Brackley is down near the border of Oxfordshire (?).

Or who knows - maybe the vicar just couldn't be bothered to record it Grin

This may be John of 1803's marriage from Alan Clark's index.

Brackley 30-Sep 1824
John HATWELL otp St Peter bachelor to
Elizabeth GEORGE otp St James spinster

Many thanks to all who made such helpful suggestions re. my HATWELL and MORRIS queries. Computer problems and a house move intervened, so I was very late in picking up the replies.  Apologies for the delay - your help is much appreciated.
