1851 place names
« on: Sunday 27 August 06 11:54 BST (UK) »

Hi folks
I have a birth place on the 1851 census given as Hewish.... is there such a place or should it be Heworth?
Are Winlaton, Whickham and Gateshead close together?
Sorry my geography isn't very good.
What about Gainford....trying to fine the birth of Thomas Nixon... Embarrassed and this one's birth is on the IGI as an individual entry.

1851 census
Winlaton Mile
Margaret Nixon born abt 1833  (Hewish?) Durham Daughter  Winlaton  Durham
Thomas Nixon born abt 1778 Widower,  (Hewish?) Durham Head  Winlaton  Durham, File cutter

Thank you Sylvia

PS there is something a bit spooky here too
An Eleanor Nixon (related??) married a Richard Wardle...my ex's name was Wardle and his family were from Durham....eeek coming back to haunt me???

If you use the search facility on this site http://www.streetmap.co.uk/   (make sure you check 'GB place' before you search) you will be able to easily find all the place you're interested in and how they relate to each other.
Best wishes

Hi Sylvia,

Here is another good one that I use all the time:

http://www.pjoiner.demon.co.uk/genuki/DUR/

If you click onto Towns and Parishes, followed by
the place name, you can then find out which other
villages are in the locality and how far they are apart.

Thanks JenB and Pels
It looks as if it should be Heworth, Ancestry says Hewish but the image is very hard to read.

It also looks as if the Gainford entry is a no go...back to the drawing board.

I'm trying to find a marriage of this Thomas Nixon  born c1781 to a Margaret? The only children I have for them are:

Mary 1826 Whickham
Thomas 1829 Whickham
Margaret 1832 Winlaton (her marriage cert gives father Thomas, a File cutter)

It seems very late to be starting a family at 45 years old so there may be earlier children somewhere, unless he was married before.

Hello again Sylvia,

I have had a look on the '51 census for the place
name - I would hazzard a guess at Heworth, but like
you find it very hard to read.

In 1861 there is an Isaac Nixon, age 39 living in
Winlaton with a nine year old son - Thomas.
Also a Jared Nixon, have you seen these? Just a wild
guess but wondered if these are two more of Thomas's
children. They are both Blacksmith's by occupation.

Best wishes,

Pels  Smiley

Thanks Pels
I'll definately have a look at this lot.

I'm wondering if this from the IGI (individual record) might be a 1st marriage for Thomas. Will never know I suppose  Undecided

Thomas Nixon
  Event(s):
Birth:  About 1782   Of, Gainford, Durham, England
Marriages:
  Spouse:  Mary Wright  Family
  License:  29 OCT 1807
