I'm looking for John Phipps born Whetstone Leicester c 1855 married Rebecca Clarke Cosby Leicester c 1854 that’s according to the Census 1881 which says they were in a married state. BUT I can't find any marriage registration for them! Their first born as far as I can tell from Census 1881 was John Henry Phipps 1878, followed by Florence M Phipps 1880 both born Cosby. There are two possibilities for JOHN PHIPPS AND REBECCA CLARKE ! therefore I'm not sure which parents belong to which ! Any help will be very much appreciated! (I'm not in the UK so searching for me is limited to internet) Thanks

Hi Belgiumbird,
Welcome to RootsChat
I couldn't find your chap under the name Phipps on previous census records.
What do you think of this?
Marriage September quarter 1875 Blaby 7a 68 John Phipps Beeby to possibly Rebecca Clarke (see here: http://tinyurl.com/p5zde)
And there's a matching John Beeby on previous census returns
1871 RG10/3233 25 18 Whetstone, Leicestershire Daniel? (or Samuel?) Beeby, head, 75, Stocking Frame Work Knitter, b. Whetstone Sharlotte, wife, 71, Chairwoman, b. Aylestone Thomas, son, unm, 37, Paralized, b. Whetstone John, grandson, 16, Bricklayer's lab, b. do.
1861 RG9/2257 25 17 Whetstone Daniel Beeby, head, 62, Stocking F W K Charlotte, wife, 58, Seamstress Thomas, son, 27, Stocking F W K Ellen, dau, 22, Stocking F W K Henrietta, dau, 19 John, grandson, 7, seamster (unnamed), grandson, 2 days
All born Whetstone.
I suppose John was the illegitimate child of one of their daughters. Ellen seems a little young. I'll have a look in 1851 for other possible candidates.

1851 HO107/2081 262 4 Whetstone, Leicestershire Daniel Beeby, head, 52, Frameworkknitter, b. Whetstone Charlotte, wife, 46, Seamer, b. Aylestone George, son, 24, Frameworkknitter, b. Whetstone Robert, son, 19, ditto, b. do. Thomas, son, 17, ditto, b. do. Ellen, dau, 12, Seamer, b. do. Henrietta, dau, 9, Seamer, b. do.
1841 HO107/599/12 5 2 Whetstone, Leicestershire Daniel Beeby, 43, Woollen Hosiery Maker Charlotte, 38 William, 16 George, 14 Daniel, 12 Elizabeth, 10 Robert, 8 Thomas, 6 Ellen, 3
Will see if I can track Elizabeth. Edit - Elizabeth is the 'companion', occupation Frame work Knitter, of Sarah Dorman unm 63 Seamer in Whetstone in 1851. By 1861, she's still unmarried, a servant with the Gill family, still in Whetstone.
Hope somebody has access to Whetstone christenings! Especially as he seems to have been registered as John Phipps September 1854 Blaby 7a 36

As for matching Rebecca Clarkes, I can see only one on census returns?
1871 RG10/3233 39 14 Cosby, Leicestershire Mary Ann Clarke, head, wid, 63, Seamer Maria, dau, unm, 37, Stocking Frame work Knitter Mahala, dau, unm, 23, ditto Rebecca, granddau, unm, 17, ditto
All born Cosby
1861 RG9/2257 40 16 Cosby, Leicestershire Richard Clark, head, 52, Stockingweaver Mary A, wife, 53 Maria, dau, unm, 27, Stockingweaver Mary A, dau, unm, 20?, ditto Rebecca, granddau, 7 Mahala, dau, 14, Stocking Sticher?
All born Cosby
The IGI has this extracted christening entry for her: REBECCA CLARK OR BACON Christening 12 August 1853 Cosby, Leicester Father John Bacon, mother Maria Clark
The only John Bacon I can see in 1851 and 1861 at Cosby is a married man - well, he wasn't necessarily from Cosby Cosby marriages 1813-1836 are on the IGI. Possible for Richard & Mary Ann: Richard Clark - Mary Ann Gee Cosby 22 Sep 1828 Cosby (christenings to this couple: William 25 Dec 1828 - Rebecca 26 Dec 1830 - Maria 16 Jul 1833 - Henry 24 Mar 1835 - George 24 Sep 1836 - Mahala 15 Aug 1847)

Mary A Gee was born ca. 1808 - too bad Cosby christenings aren't online for that time frame.
I can see the family in 1851, and they have Gee neighbours*. I'll just post them in case you discover they are related:
HO107/2081 288 19 & 20 Cosby, Leicestershire Richard Clarke, head, 42, F W K Mary Ann, wife, 43, F W K William, son, unm, 22, F W K Maria, dau, 17, F W K Henry, son, 16, F W K Mary Ann, dau, 10, scholar Mahala, dau, 3, scholar Mary Ann Allen?, neice, unm, 19, F W K
and next door: William Gee, head, 66, Ag lab, b. Dunton? Sarah, wife, 62 John, son, unm, 32, F W K George, son, unm, 21, Ag lab John Pratt?, grandson, 11, Ag lab John Hellis?, lodger, unm, 58, F W K, b. Northampton Winwich
All born Cosby unless otherwise stated.
*Going back to 1841 however, I see a couple George Gee 55/Mary Gee 55 (occupation guess what - Woollen hosiery Maker) who have a daughter Mahala...
And 1841 HO107/597/20 9 9 Cosby, Leicestershire Richard Clarke, 30, Woollen Hosiery Maker Mary, 30 William, 12 Rebecca, 10 Maria, 8 Henry, 6 Mary, 6months
All born in county

Hi, I think your findings of marriage reg of John Phipps Beeby to Rebecca Clarke agrees with the info I have received from Mike with his findings stating their first child was born 1876. Thank you for all your hard work. Certainly worth sending for the marriage certificate ! Glenda
