Paper Mills in County Mayo
« on: Wednesday 30 August 06 20:06 UTC (UK) »

Does anyone have any information regarding the existence of paper mills in Mayo during the 19th century?  My great great grandfather is listed on his daughter's wedding certificate as having been a foreman in a paper mill there but I cannot find any evidence of the industry in those parts.
Any clues appreciated!

A confused owl!

Hiya Owl,

Send an email to the Local History Department, Castlebar Central Library, Castlebar, Co. Mayo.

Post a message giving a progress report. If they are  a bit slow replying I'll phone them and gee them up for you.

All the Best,

Dear Chris,
Thank you for replying.  Unfortunately, when I click to 'link with the thread' it then says click for info on my great great grandfather.  When I click on that it sends me back to click for thread and so on. Am I doing something wrong?

You are doing nothing wrong Owl.

I created the link to your other thread as you did not mention your grandfather's name on this thread.

Dear Chris,
Sorry! Thought there was information that I couldn't access!  Thank you for creating the link.  No news from Castlebar Library yet but it is early days. Thank you for your interest so far!

Hiya Owl,

I phoned both the Castlebar Library and National Archives in Dublin with no success. I'm looking at the Online Catalogues of the National Archives. There'd be no harm in you having a look at these too in case I miss something. The person to whom I spoke at the Archives suggests trying both Trinity College, Dublin and University College, Dublin. They suggested the Hstory Department might be the place to make initial enquiries.

I'm not sure if there are Industrial Archaeologists in Ireland as they are the people who might have such information. There is a book "The Millers & the Mills of Ireland of about 1850" a list compiled by William E. Hogg but I'm not sure if it covers Paper Mills.

Hi Chris,
Thank you once again for your help.  I have found the ISBN number for the book and will give it a try. I will also try writing to the History Dept. as you suggest - nothing ventured.....etc.

Hiya Owl,

Lewis's Topographical Dictionary of Ireland, 1837 describes several places in Co. Mayo including Castlebar.
There is no mention of a paper mill in Castlebar. I have not checked the other places.

Hi Chris,
Thank you for your efforts.  I'm beginning to wonder if my great great grandfather's later profession was made up by his daughter! At the time of her  birth he was a farmer and publican so had wondered if he had had to change jobs after losing his farm. If he did, it is beginning to look increasingly unlikely that he worked in a paper mill as a foreman or otherwise!  He died circa 1878 so the paper mill would have to have been in that area of County Mayo at that time. I'll keep looking!
Thanks again!

Hiya Owl,

I've borrowed a book from the library "The Millers and Mills of Ireland of about 1850" compiled by William E. Hogg. The following types of mills were in the county ... Bleach, corn, flour, malt and tuck.

Best Wishes, Chris
