Hi Wendy,
Sorry I forgot to add that we think Cutcliffe was her married name in 1861. In 1870 she married James Keirle and she was living in Swansea. Her marriage certificate says she was a widow and her fathers surname was Gooden. We are looking for her husband Cutliffes forename and childrens names from that marriage. We also think she may have been born in Suffolk, England and about 1820 but don't know if those are the right details for sure. Thanks.

How do you know it was Elizabeth Cutcliffe?
Because when I looked at the marriage endex she was not on the same page, I take it, it was an error?
So have you seen the 1871 census to see that there is a John Gooding down as Father in law?
But you're saying that the surname is GOODEN?

Hi Wendy,
Yes, I know, I too looked at marriages for Cutcliffe and Gooden, Gooding & Goodden and could find nothing on the same page. There IS some question about spelling of her maiden surname. But it appears perhaps that she married 3 times..maybe once before Cutcliffe? I just figured that at least in 1861 there was a good chance she was still married to Cutcliffe. But never count on assumptions when it comes to genealogy, right? I have not seen the 1871 census for Elizabeth. Would most appreciate if you could send me those details. Thanks.

I hadn't checked marriage record online for Cutcliffe & Keirle before today. It does appear there is some transcription error. I am helping a friend with this and she has the marriage certificate which I haven't seen first hand.

When you get time can you askk the friend to confirm the first name of Mr Gooden (inc variations) and his occupation and wether it states how old James Kerle is that way then I know if I found the right 1871 entry for them in the census.

Hi Wendy,
Thanks. You did get the right one for sure. On the marriage certificate he is also listed as in the Coast Gaurd but as John GOODEN. Is Elizabeth Cutcliffe age 47 on the 1861 census with husband John Cutcliffe in Swansea? His occupation was probably victuallar also as there is a newspaper article in 1869 that notes Elizabeth Cutcliffe sold a (victuallising?) premise in Swansea. Also found a death notice for John Cutcliffe earlier that same year in Swansea.

I have had another look in the 1861 census but can't see her.
I saw the death entry so going on the birth year that it gives for the John Cutcliffe I did look for him but with not knowing where he was born, I could not be certain I found him,

Thanks very much Wendy for taking the time to look that up for me. Is there a chance they could be listed as CUTLIFFE instead and not CUTCLIFFE? Funnily enough the newspaper article does spell her surname the first way, with no second "C". Another misspelling?!
