1861/71 Census - HONEYBUN
« on: Saturday 02 September 06 00:40 BST (UK) »

Would be very grateful of a lookup please
I am trying to find Norah Jane Honeybun in the 1861 census, I would have expected her to be with her family in Portisham:

From the Dorset OPC transcription:
46;Shilvinghampton
William Honeyburn Head 34
Sarah Honeyburn wife 34 b.Loders
Frances Ann dau 7
Robert Honeybun son 6
George son 4
Harriett dau 2
Hannah dau 9mths

Norah Jane would have been 10/11 years old she was born in 1850 in Burstock. I am hoping she may have been missed in the transcribing? She was definetley still living.

Surname variations: Honeybun; Honeyben; Honyben, Honeyburn.

And also trying to find this family in Dorset in 1871, they lost a son on Powerstock in 1871 but I can't locate them.

Many thanks in advance
Kiwigal

Thanks Joe,
Norah first appears in census 1851 aged 1 year with her parents in Burstock. Her birth wasn't registered until 1852, when she was baptised in Burstock the same year;and then she disappears until she married in 1875, appearing as the wife of Thomas Bartlett in census 1881 in Stoke Abbott.

Had hoped that the Hannah in census 1871 might have been her sister, right age wrong birth place, but I can't place Mary as an Aunt in the family, either paternally or maternally.(she was also in Stoke Abbott in 1861).
I got all excited there for a moment though  Tongue, the Bowditch name keeps popping up in this Honeybun family, but I can't connect it to them at this stage

Great to find her family in 1871 though, fills in a couple of gaps.
Again many thanks for your time

Hi Kiwigal,

Normally babies are born and christened in the same place but it doesn't always happen.

We had a Honeybun born in Lytchett Matravers but was christened in the Bridport area where they came from.

Hi Kiwigal

It could be that Hannah/Norah are the same person. Undecided

There is obviously a Bowditch connection as William and Sarahs daughter Harriet as Bowdetch as a middle name.

You guys are just sooooooooo clever....... you have provided a whole new line to my Barrett line, finding me another gggg aunt and all.

Firstly Norah Janes birth is recorded as....
Birth Free BMD-Internet, [5a-386] June 1852 Qtr Beaminster Reg. Recorded as " Anorah Jane Honeybun" no wonder she took so long to find  Cool.

Thanks for finding Nora Jane in 61 and 71 census's.
her sister "Mary Jane" died in Mar 1852. Maybe this threw her mother into a bit of a spin and grandma stepped in to the rescue taking toddler jane to live with her?

census 1871
Mary Bowditch 62 head widow b Thorniscombe   Miller and Farmer of 25 acres
Amelia  " 28 Un dau b    "
John    " 26 son Un b     "
Hannah Honeybun 10 niece b Corfe
John Halson 16 Servant b Broadwinson

Now to the whole new line and hopefully the solving of the Bowditch link....
Had a dig to try and find out how Mary could be an aunt

Mary Bowditch is (so it appears at this stage, family search and Dorset opc records) actually is the great aunt of Hannah and her sister (Norah) Jane.

William Barrett = Hannah (of Shute, Devon)
                    (died bef 1841)       (d 1848 St Abbott)
                                               |
Hannah Barrett                                           Mary Barrett
(b 1802 Shute)                                      (b 1810 Stoke Abbott)
= Joseph Honeybun                                  = John Bowditch
=1825 Stoke Abbott                                  =  1841 Beaminster
              |                                                                |
William Barrett Honeybun                            John Bowditch
 =Sarah Hyde Travers                                     =Jane Purchase
              |                                                                 |
   Norah Jane                                        Robert Barrett Bowditch
   Hannah

So a sister for Hannah Barrett it seems, I am pretty sure she had a brother Robert and also a sister Elizabeth also of Stoke Abbott fame. Robert married Dorothy Bussell and Elizabeth married Azariah Elliott.

Again many thanks for all the help. Just amazing what another set of eyes can do.

Hi, I'm a descendent of William Honeybun & Sarah Hyde Bowditch.   You are looking for Mary Jane Honeybun born 02/03/1851.   She would not appear on the 1861 census because she died 14/03/1852.

Is this of any help to you?   How far have you got with your research and do you have any family photos 19th Century.

You show Wm Honeybun married to Sarah Hyde Travers?

Please help explain.
