Are you certain of James' birthdate? In the 1851 there's a James and Sarah with a William of the right age (and four other children) but he was born in 1790.

And in the 1841 there is a James and Sarah with a five year old Thomas, but this James was born in 1816!

I think this is he right one, and he has just given a false age, or his age was mistranscribed, because in the 1861 there are a few more kids. The daughter Lavinia was born c1848. Does Lavinia show on the 1851...interestingly, lLivina went onto marry a Sydney Elliots in 1869, two years after having her son George, who is labelled as SON ILLEGITIMATE in the 1881 census.
Kind Regards,
Colleen

I think the James from the 1851 is yours - the age could be 61 or 41, but bearing in mind the youngest child is only 9 months old, I'd go for the 41.
1851 - HO107/1958, folio 401, p 17. Boulton Lane, Dursley, Gloucestershire.
James Harrold, Head, M, 41, Labourer, b. Dursley. Sarah Harrold, Wife, M, 37, b. Dursley. Thomas Harrold, Son, 15, Labourer, b. Dursley. George Harrold, Son, 11, Labourer, b. Dursley. William Harrold, Son, 8, Labourer, b. Dursley. Mary Ann Harrold, Daughter, 6 or 4?, b. Dursley. Sarah Harrold, Daughter, 9mths, Dursley.
I'll have another look at the 1841.
Monica
Sorry - No Lavinia!

Hi
That is odd, becaue I would have thought Lavinia would have been on there, and what is more odd, is that Sarah and Mary Ann dont show on the 1861, but William does, and it seems the right family.

1841 - HO107/347/16, folio 28, p 19. Slade Lane, Dursley.
James Harrold, 25, Ag lab, b. Gloucestershire. Sarah Harrold, 25, b. Gloucestershire. Thomas Harrold, 5, Gloucestershire.
The ages could be "wrong" because of the rounding down that was done.
I agree - poor little Lavinia. It makes you want to know the stories behind the census details, doesn't it?

Its heartbreaking....makes me wonder if her childhood was a factor in her illegitimate sons birth...poor child may well have been rejected from birth.
So sad.

Life must have been very hard for the family, if the 1851 census is right in listing William and George as labourers at their age. Maybe Lavinia was going to be cared for better with the Wymans?
Did you find the missing girls in the 1861? They may be already in service, despite their ages.

I think you need to look for a death for Lavinia too. In the 1891 Sidney is remarried to Abiah and they have children with the surnames of Elliots and Jackson so she was probably a widow.
The details are on RG12, piece 2003, folio 25, p 14. If you need a transcription, let me know.
