There's a William Atcheson marries an Agnes Young 13 May 1844 at Whittingham which is not a million miles from Felton. William's father is George Atcheson. Possible first marriage for William perhaps? (on the IGI)

Me again

Trying another tack - have you asked where they were living on the 1851 - that might give you an idea where they got married.

Hi Tessy, you are just like me! thanks for trying. I only have George in 1851 he is at home with the family in Old Shotton Northumberland but as this is 6/7 years before he marries and has his first son there is time to move around a bit but they never go far, when you consider their firs child was born Felton I think it likely they married near by. Second child born Cramlington next two Earsdon Northumberland.
Atchison m Atchison comes from 1871 census
George Atchison head 40 b. Felton coll. blacksmith
Isabella Atchison wife 37 b Felton
John son 13 b. Felton
Mary 8
Isabella 2
Sarah 3 months
AND THIS IS THE CLINCHER
George Atchison father in law 75 b. Coldstream
NOW I KNOW THAT GEORGE SENIOR IS ISABELLA FATHER AS I HAVE GEORGE HEAD B FELTON AT HOME WITH HIS FATHER JOHN IN 1851.
I'm confused just typing it. We need a real Miss Marple to sort this one out.
Huh Huh Huh Huh Huh
With not being able to find Johns birth who I am researching and this funny Atchison Atchison I did find and send for Sarahs birth cert. Johns sister and guess what   Roll Eyes it confirmed all, father George Atchison mother Isabella Atchison maiden name Atchison  Lips Sealed Lips Sealed Lips Sealed

Crikey no wonder you're confused.

Having read your last post 3 times I think I've got the gist of it.

John is George's father

George is Isabella's father - born Coldstream.

It's John you're researching and can't find his birth.

Bearing in mind they told the enummerators all sorts of porkies (one of my gr gr grandmothers said she came from Cornwall, Carlisle and Ireland in three different census - I think she must have misunderstood the question and thought they meant where had she JUST come from - durh)

So have you thought of looking in Scotland for John's birth? Aitchison is a Scots name is it not?

If you look on www.spatial-literacy.org there is a surname profiler which shows the greatest concentration of the name is in the borders region - Roxburghshire and higher up towards Edinburgh.

I've had a look on the IGI and familysearch but I can't find the wedding of George and Isabella. If the record office were open someone could have a look for you but the record office at Woodhorn isn't due to reopen until November.

If I think of anything I'll let you know.

Thanks Tessy good not to feel your on your own. I do feel John would have been born Felton Northumberland as it is very consistant on every census up until 1901  therefore I am sure the marriage would be Felton or definitely Northumberland. Would love John birth or his parents marriage!

Hi Irret

Just for information:

I'm not sure where you are in the country but on the 1881 it says they were born Swarland, Felton.

I live in Northumberland and Swarland is a distinctly different place to Felton - about 2 miles distant - Swarland in probably in Felton Parish.

Also, I had a marriage I couldn't find and I eventually found it by trawling through every marriage in every place in Northumberland on the IGI and I found it in a place they never lived but as they were farmworkers they moved around a lot and I suppose it was the nearest place to where they worked - out in the middle of nowhere. I've since got a copy of the marriage record and been to the place and I had no idea there was any connection to it from what was on the census records.

I would also check the IGI for Roxburgh, Scotland.  If you take everything they told the enummerators for granted you do end up with dead ends - you have to approach it with all the other bits and bobs you know and believe me it seems like at least half the people who ended up in Northumberland came from Scotland - particularly Roxburghshire. I might be wrong, maybe they did marry in Felton and the records are missing, or perhaps lurking in the record office but you'll have to wait till November to find out I'm afraid.

If you have no luck by the time the record office finally opens - and I'm not holding my breath - I'll check Felton for you.

That's very kind of you I take on board everything you have said, thank you. I live in the south of England and have visited Morpeth records office just before they closed but can't see I will get there again as my husband drove us. So you never know I may have to take you up on your kind offer.
