Elizabeth Merry
« on: Saturday 02 September 06 07:11 BST (UK) »

Elizabeth Merry was transported to Van Dieman's land on " Lady of the Lake" 1/11/1829. Her father was believed to be Matthew Merry and she had two children to a Michael Cairns one of which was transported with her ( Agnes).
As per NAS her address in 1828 was Boyd Street, Kilmarnock.
Can anyone enlighten me further on Elizabeth and her origins?

There is an entry for Elizabeth's birth and her siblings on IGI. A combination of submitted entries and actual extracts from the OPRs (Elizabeth's is an actual extract):

2. ELIZABETH MERRY Birth: 16 JUN 1799 Kilmarnock, Ayr, Scotland
3. MARGARET MERRY Birth: 27 MAR 1809 Kilmarnock, Ayr, Scotland
4. MARGARET MERRY Birth: 20 APR 1813 Kilmarnock, Ayr, Scotland
5. William Merry Christening: 27 DEC 1795 Kilmarnock, Ayr, Scotland
6. Thomas Merry Christening: 01 JAN 1802 Kilmarnock, Ayr, Scotland
7. Matthew Merry Christening: 01 OCT 1803 Kilmarnock, Ayr, Scotland
8. James Merry Christening: 30 JAN 1805 Kilmarnock, Ayr, Scotland
9. Mungo Merry Christening: 14 DEC 1810 Kilmarnock, Ayr, Scotland

Regards.

This looks like the parents' marriage (Ann can be variant of Agnes):

MATHEW MIRRIE     Marriages: Spouse: AGNES GILCHRIST
Marriage: 27 FEB 1795 Kilmarnock, Ayr, Scotland

Hi Maxn

She  appears on the Tasmania lists as born 1799 also (died 1865 - did her death record enlarge on her parentage & origins?)
http://portal.archives.tas.gov.au/menu.aspx?search=8

This site appears to be by a descendant of Elizabeth:
http://www.leehistory.net/genealogy/getperson.php?personID=I17871&tree=lee
http://www.leehistory.net/genealogy/history/Wheeler%20Family%20History.htm

The full name of the daughter is Agnes Willis MERRY born abt 1818. Her unknown sibling was apparently born abt 1816. Both children were supposed to be illegitimate as Elizabeth was not known to be married to Michael CAIRNS.

It names the same birthday for Elizabeth as Monica has found, but I suspect they may have found it the same place (IGI)  and are only assuming it's her, as they have not entered any parents information. As Monica says, Agnes was often interchanged for Ann in earlier records. You will also find MERRY becomes MURRY or MURRAY, etc on some records as well as: Merrie Merri Merry Merrey Mirry Mirrie

Ayrshire Roots : The person uploading records on this site has an email address and  appears to have a deep interest in the MERRY name in Ayr - I suspect the records she list regarding issue of Matthew MERRY  Anne GILCHRIST may be uplifted and unproven off the IGI and not from OPR, but nevertheless she may be able to help.
http://fp.ayrshireroots.plus.com/Genealogy/Surnames/Merry/Merry%20B%20&%20M%20Ayrshire.htm

Also per NAS:  The Nat Scot Archives of Scotland
A "crime" predating the 1828 one which saw her transported.
Ref:  AD14/21/58
Title:  Precognition against Elizabeth Merry for the crime of theft
Date 1821  Accused : Elizabeth Merry, daughter of Matthew Merry, weaver, Age: 21, Address: Kilmarnock, Ayrshire

I expect the "Weaver" will refer to her father.

This Rootsweb item:
http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/read/AYRSHIRE/2006-02/1139536147
Has a chap in Feb 2006  with the OPR of Mungo MERRY 1810 - a probable brother - and invites you to contact him off list for further details from the OPR.

Also worth noting, of the 9 children found on IGI to Matthew MERRY & Anne GilCHRIST:
The Extracted entries all name mother as Ann GILCHRIST
The Submitted entries all name her as Ann Agnes Watson GILCHRIST

1. William 1795 (sub)
2. Anne 1797 (ext)
3 Elizabeth 1799 (ext)
4. Thomas 1802 (sub)
5. Matthew 1803 (sub
6 James 1805 (sub
7 Margaret 1809 (ext)
8  Mungo 1810 (sub)
9 Margaret 1813 (ext)

Cheers

Searching the 1841 Census transcripts for MERRY in Kilmarnock, and esp.  for children of Matthew MERRY & Ann GILCHRIST - not find an awful lot though!

I believe their son William MERRY born 1795  - Elizabeth's brother? - possibly married Jean LACHLAN in Kilmarnock 25 Dec 1818 (IGI)
Their issue off IGI - all name mother as Jean/Jane LAUGHLAND (some Sub, sume ext)
Agnes MERRY Birth: 30 NOV 1819
Matthew MERRY Birth: 07 AUG 1822
Anne MERRY Birth: 04 MAR 1825
John MERRY th: 10 FEB 1828
Jean MERRY Birth: 18 DEC 1829
William MERRY Birth: 06 JUN 1832
Janet Laughland MERRY Birth: 20 JUL 1835

In 1841 This looks like same William & family
Kilmarnock Ayr,
Parish Nr 567, ED 18
Address: Grange Street
William MERRY 40, Wool H L W Carpet  - Y
Jean MERRY 45, Worsted Bobin Winder - Y
Agness MERRY 20, Bonnet Weaver Woolen - Y
Ann MERRY 15, Hand Sewer - Y
Jean MERRY 10 - Y
William MERRY 9 - Y
Janet MERRY 6 - Y
Margaret MERRY 2 - Y

Cheers
