I am trying to find a George Griggs born around 1790. I have very few details about him and don't know his wife's name. He appears on his daughter Mary's marriage certificate in 1840 but I don't know for sure that he was still alive in 1841.
Mary lived in Ramsgate, so I am assuming that her father was from Thanet as well.
Who were the witnesses on her marriage certificate - any clues there? What was George's occupation?
There was a George GRIGGS and Elizabeth having children at about that time in Margate ie. Caroline 1815 http://www.familysearch.org but the batch number only goes back to 1813
Her marriage certificate just says full age and she married John Cramp. The witnesses were Joseph Marriott and Mary Cramp (John's sister?) They were living in Hereson Road Ramsgate when they married and lived at 1 Princes Road, Ramsgate in 1841 and 1851 censuses. The 1851 census shows Mary as being born in Margate.
From the information provided to you back in 2005 you know Mary's birthyear which was in the region of 1813
Quote
1851
1 Princes Palace?, Ramsgate
John CRAMP head mar 44 lab b.Ramsgate Mary wife 38 b.Margate Catherine dau 12 b.Ramsgate Mary dau 7 b.Ramsgate Ann dau 3 b.Ramsgate
Knowing the birthyear helps us get a rough idea of how old the parents may have been on a particular census - allowing for any older children
There is only one George Griggs entry on the 1841 who was old enough to have fathered a child in 1813. However - he was an agricultural labourer, not a blacksmith, aged 70 and living in the Union Workhouse in Bridge
There is this entry on the IGI but you have no way of knowing whether it is the correct one
Mary Ann Griggs Christening: 02 JUN 1816 Staple Kent, Parents George Griggs & Sarah Griggs
There is a lookup offer for Thanet St John (Margate) parish registers - it might be a good idea to enquire about any baptism of a Mary GRIGGS c1813 (give or take a year or two) and also the baptism of Caroline 1815 to see whether her father was a blacksmith.
Hi, sorry if you already have this message, I am new to the site and have not found my way around yet. I am interested in the George Griggs b. 1790 that you are looking for. I have a George Griggs b. 1790 in Sandwich that just maybe a possibility. He does not appear in the1841 census so I presumed him dead. He is one of six children born to James and Mary Griggs, in Sandwich. The only (I believed ) surviving child was William b. 1789 who is my gtx4grandfather. William was a blacksmith. The only other survivor of childhood in the family was James b. 1787 but again he does not appear on the 1841 census so I presume he died before this. It would be good to hear from you about this if you think it could be a match. Regards Gini
Hi Barbara, This is what I have - James Griggs. b. 1760 Sandwich m. Mary b. 1761 Sandwich in 1784 in Sandwich. William b. 1785 d. 1787 James b. 1787 William b. 1789 m. Mary Browning b. 1790 Littlebourne, in 1811. (This is my ancester) - 9 children George b. 1790 Anne b.d. 1792 John b. 1794 d. 1795
I have never been able to trace George or James as they have not appeared on the 1841 Census (probably died or could have emigraged). However I do know they were all Blacksmiths, which is what drew me to your post. Although errors of birth dates, & towns born etc., rarely is there an error with occupation. George Griggs b. 1790 and a blacksmith could so easily be the father of Mary b. 1813 who married John Cramp in Ramsgate. William (George's brother) left Sandwich in his early twenties probably to find work as a Blacksmith, so why not George. Perhaps you could send me the information you have and I can help in the search. Good to hear from you. Regards Virginia
It cerainly sounds like a probable match for the family. There can't have been too many blacksmiths around in one area.
I don't have anymore information on George other than a possible marriage with Elizabeth Ladd on 8th October 1809 at St Peters, Thanet.
As for Mary, she married John Cramp 11 August 1840 in the parish church of St Lawrence, and was shown as full age. Both were living in Hereson Road Ramsgate and I believe they may have already had a daughter Catherine from details on the 1841 census.
In both the 1841 and 1851 censuses they were living at 1 Princes Place, Ramsgate. They had 2 more daughters Mary Ann born 1844 and Anne born 1848.
That is as far as I have got with the family. At some point I am hoping to be able to check the parish records in Thanet to see what else I can find.
Thanks for your help with this. Any leads to follow up would be great.
