Who is Jock????

Hi,
Would anyone actually be named Jock or is it an affectionate term for something else - John, James etc.?

I'm looking for Jock Ashley born Huntingdon area probably between 1900 and 1910 - I don't think there is a scottish connection.

I think Jock is a Scottish form of John or a nickname for anyone Scottish.

 I thought so too but there is no obvious Scottish connection (that I can find so far) thanks anyway BearKat
