Emma Maria CHAPLIN
« on: Sunday 10 September 06 22:56 BST (UK) »

Oh i cant believe it and i must be doing something terribly wrong? Either that or i am tired and missing it!

I am looking for an Emma Maria Chaplin born 1882 , Bosmere, Suffolk.
I have her birth details incl the vol 4a and page for the registration. I have also got her marriage details to Mark Thomas Allen (the family i am tracing back) in 1906 in Bosmere, Suffolk. I have just spent most of this evening trying to find her in the 1901 and 1891 census to be totally flumuxed. In fact i am now having problems finding Mark even though i have his birth details and even his death details but not his parents so it has to be my eyes. In desperation i have come here to see if anyone can shed light on why i am failing.

Anyone out there who can help a tired and frustrated lady? (actually it may be easier to send for the marriage certificate to get the parents lol)

Hi Carla

Hmm. I see what you mean. It's suspicious that she's not listed as "Emma Chaplin" in 1891 or 1901.
At a guess:
*  her surname was badly mistranscribed on both occasions or
*  she wasn't known by either of her first names or
*  her father died when she was very young, her mother remarried and Mum and daughter are listed under a different surname.

In all honesty, you can only hope to get a better picture by ordering her birth and marriage certificates.

Hi Dave
Thank goodness for that. i thought i was going mad lol. In fact i was so determined to find it tonight i am still awake now, albeit not really with it. I just hoped someone else would verify what i thought which was in fact that her mother had remarried. The only problem is that on the marriage details it does state her surname as Chaplin. Well thanks so much and you have enabled me to finally go to bed. I will order the marriage certificate and hopefully that will get this sorted once and for all. Will let you know what i find....eventually!

Much appreciated

Hi Carla,

This looks like it could be one of Charlie Chaplin's extended family  Grin

There was a long interesting article on his Suffolk roots in this Saturday's East Anglian Daily Times.

Will check it out again (I have saved it of course) and will get back to you.

Certainly Needham Market is a parish within the Bosmere and Claydon Hundred  Smiley

Okay i have now found that there is a strong possibility Emma had a twin sister Mary Louisa. They both had the same father, John, named on Emma's marriage certificate so i am pretty confident of this. I just still cant find them in the 1891 census. Has anyone got any ideas please. :-(
