Lost grandad... Gold Mining Richard Eddy
« on: Monday 11 September 06 00:11 BST (UK) »

Could someone help me please.?

Richard Eddy b1871 St Just, Cornwall...he does not appear on a UK census since 1871 when he was nine years old.
He was back in the UK for his marriage to Elizabeth Jane Thomas in 1899 at St Just, Cornwall.  But was not on the 1901 census...his death was in 1902 at Trewellard St Just.

He must have returned to the UK a few times so hopefully will be found on a passenger list, and also on a census. His mother and father were Richard and Sarah Eddy.

I have no knowledge of where he was actually gold mining as I just have his marriage and death certificates.

Hope it's not too much to ask, as I know my details are vague as to dates.

Regards Amber

Hi Amber
Have no way of knowing if this is "your" Richard, but throwing it in, just in case.

Richard Eddy, age 21, born England, arrived in NY in April 1891, destination Montana, occupation: Miner.

1900 US census for Montana
Richard Eddy, age 29, single, born June 1970 England, quartz miner (gold is found in quartz).
Parents born England, to USA in 189? (Cool is naturalized.

Just not sure on this one. Let me know if you need/want further details on this.

Valerie.

Hi Grub...many thanks for throwing it in Wink

Could you give me the information just incase it is him...it sounds good

Postman has just delivered his birth certifcate:
Richard Eddy born 10 July 1871....orh err that's a bit out

I wonder if the  census are more accurate than ours but it would still work in with his death 6th September 1902...at 31years.

Regards Amber

Hi Amber
This Richard was aboard the SERVIA, which arrived in NY on 6 April 1891. He seemed to be travelling with a group of young men about the same age,all miners and all going to Montana.
The ship left from Liverpool.

1900 census is for Gardiner, Park County, Montana
Richard is listed as Head of Household, but is alone.
Definitely 29 YO. Immigration year looking more like 1890, but that often differs on census, folks tend(ed) to be unsure, so it could be one arriving in '91.
He can read, write and speak english and is renting his house.

Hope this helps.

Hi Valerie,

Many thanks for the info...I just couldn't afford to get global Ancestory for just one person. Kiss

I'll see if I can get the passenger list for the Servia, possibly some of the other miners lived near him in Pendeen, Cornwall so should on a census at sometime.....anything that helps to prove it is him.
