Does anyone recognise these names:

* PATRICK PHELAN - died before 1867.
* ANN, his daughter born c1846.
* THOMAS PHELAN, son of ANN born c1865?

How could I search for THOMAS's birth in Irish registers?
I have no idea where this PHELAN family lived although it MIGHT have been Waterford.
Any information / advice will be much appreciated.

Hi Fliss,

The Phelan name is quite common in the Waterford area, I have been searching my Hamilton family from Waterford City and have seen the Phelan name on numerous occasions.

You can search the Irish Birth Death and Marriage Index's at a Family History Center run by the Mormon Church. The Index's are listed alphabetically so if you search for Phelan Thomas around about 1865 you may find an entry. Take a note of the Qtr which would be March, June, Sept, or December depending when the birth was registered. Note also the Volume Number and Page Number (If it's any help all my Waterford City entries have been found in Vol.4). When you have all this info you can order a certificate on line from the Dublin Records Office.

I don't know how long you have been researching but Irish research is quite difficult. If you don't know where your nearest family history center is, you could go onto the Mormon site which is www.familysearch.org and they have a link that lets you find your nearest centre. You can also search for you ancestors on this site and it's free.

You could also join a Waterford Mailing list which can be found at Rootsweb.com. I have posted messages on this list and people are very helpful, there is a search facility so if anybody has already posted regarding the Phelan name then you will be able to read the post.

Also if you read my earlier posting on this list you will see information about a site where you can view Waterford City Householders in 1909/10. I found quite a few of my Hamilton's on this list in fact one of them had a Phelan as a next door neighbour in Emmets Place.

I hope this has been of some help to you, the people on this site are really helpful, I have posted quite a few questions and people have always helped me out.
