How to re-size?

Hi all

I have just been looking at Rovert's photos and noting the comments about size.

I too have a small photo which I wanted to send to a magazine. What size dpi should I set it at for scanning and what about the brightness and contrast?

I have an Epson Perfection 640U scanner and use the Microsoft Scanner and Camera Wizard to scan.

Quite vague about this technology bit I'm afraid.

I would suggest a minimum of 300 dpi but personaly I use 2400 to 9600 (large I know, but I like big  Grin) but you will get very large files, and I save the files as a .tiff format, in my opinion .tiff's are better for working with when if comes to editing them.

Good to scan at 300-600 dpi very very bad to over compress your images.

I agree with Colin about scanning resolutions. As an example the photo that I put up on this thread:

was originally only 1 1/2 ins in height. The scanned image was around the size that Colin mentions. I had to resize and slightly compress it to put up on the board.

Thank you Colin and JL will try what you suggested although I thought tiffs were more difficult to send and we should use jpegs. Told you my technology was rubbish!!!

Just noticed that you want to send a photo to a magazine.

Tiffs are larger files so in that respect they are more difficult to send- take longer. They are best if you are doing lots of restoration, etc. work but I would think that if you  want to send to a magazine, jpg with minimum compression is best.

Have you checked with the magazine as to what format they will accept/prefer?

PS -If you scan at a high resolution - say 300 - 600 dpi or more, the mag will be able to print at a 'decent' size. They will be able to set the brightness and contrast in their own software.
