Hogg Mystery

Hi all

My G G Uncle Surtees Hogg was born 1908 in Gateshead.
He married my G G Aunt who's name was Florence.
Surtees and Florence (or Florrie as we knew her) moved to London and Surtees was in the Army during ww2
He was captured by the Japanese and tortured...they ripped out all his finger and toe nails, and after more torture, disembowled him.
My G G Aunt wrote to my Nan to inform her of his death, and the circumstances, obvously devestated, and it was spoke of all through my mothers childhood and my own.
The problem is, I can find no record of there Marriage, nor a record of his death on the CWGC.
I need this as I am not sure whether she was an Aunt through my G Grans side or G Grandads side.
I have tried to search for Florences borth, and typically, both surnames I am researching, Davey and Rothery, have a Florence!

Can anyone help..I have searched NA, Durham Records Online, County Durham Registrars, and all to no avail, even Ancestry s giving me false results, and I don't know where else to go.

Many Thanks

Colleen

Hi Collen

Have you searched the GRO Marriage Index?

Maybe Surtees was married before Florence.

Marriage 3Q 1933
Surtees HOGG
Evelyn M CHARLTON

Hi Helen,

This never occurred to me before now!
I did search the GRO index, on Ancestry but lots were missing pages....this has certainly shed new light...trust me there is only 2 Surtees Hoggs, and this has to be one of them.

Many Many Thanks

Hi Colleen

I've found two daughters to this couple in the Birth Indexes.  There could be more children - I've only looked up to the end of 1938.

1Q 1935  Margaret E  Newcastle T 10b 222
2Q 1938  Maureen     Newcastle T 10b 138
