My husband's Welsh family has several branches with men who have the given name Kyffin or Cuffin. We've not yet found a family connection to any Kyffin families, but recently I received a copy of a Will dated 1844 written by a member of the same family. She was living at Park Issa, Oswestry. Research into the dwelling named Park Issa (in Salop Road) shows that the Kyffin family lived there from the late 1790s. In the 1841 and 1851 census Kyffins still lived there but it was sold in the 1850s to George Owen, who lived there until at least 1901.
Does anyone know anything about the Kyffins of Oswestry? The IGI has loads of them but I don't know where to start. Thomas Kyffin, who lived at Park Issa in 1841, was 75 at the time of the census. The only likely christening for him is the son of John Kyffin and Blanche Roberts, but that's not much to go on. Thomas was the only Kyffin in the household but being 1841 it doesn't show marital status, so he could have been widowed or never married.
Thanks, Eve

Hi
The Kyffins were quite a well known family in the area.
If you go to A2a
http://www.a2a.org.uk/
or the Welsh National Library site
http://www.llgc.org.uk:81/
You'll find quite a number of documents and papers relating to the family.

Thank you, you are brilliant! I just followed the A2A link and searched for "Kyffin Oswestry" and the second document was the Will of the Thomas Kyffin I mentioned from the 1841 census. I downloaded it, and in it he refers to his "cousin Catherine Rowlands otherwise Williams", the person from my husband's tree! He also refers to several other people I suspected were connected - all nicely mentioned by name with their parents' names as well. Bless him! I've only glanced at it so far - it's 9 pages of legal verbiage and difficult handwriting - but I've a feeling it's going to solve a lot of mysteries.
Also on the A2A list was the Will of his cousin Elizabeth who was living at Park Issa in 1851, and who is mentioned in Thomas' Will - next on the list!
Thanks again, so much. Eve

These resources are wonderful
Sometimes parish registers don't offer what's needed.
Glad you found what you were looking for.
Was he wealthy?

He wasn't scratching for a penny, that's for sure! The Will includes property, silver plate, pewter, cold hard cash - all sorts. I was just looking through the Welsh archives and there are loads of records for him - sending drafts for 200 pounds all over the place, negotiating property sales, sorting out legacies. I'll have to spend some time extracting all the relevant entries. Catherine Williams and Thomas Kyffin both left legacies to Charles Wilding, and correspondence between Kyffin and Wilding also features in the Welsh archives - gee, wish I lived in Wales! Or England! Still, it's remarkable what's available to researchers in far-flung places via the internet, so even in Melbourne (Aus) I can find information with the help of genie angels like you!
All the best, Eve

Sorry we have been so long in connecting. I know a lot about the family you are talking about, since I am a direct descendant and have researched them very thoroughly. Let me know if you are still interested. Tony Kyffin

Hello Tony, I would very much like to hear from you about the Kyffins - I'm still interested. The more I researched my husband's family the more instances I found of Kyffin being used as a given or middle name. Some of the connections I made were best-guesses so it would be great to learn more and get it right. Thanks lots, Eve.
Hello Pete, Thanks very much for the Parish Register entries - they're further back than I'd gone, so they'll help with earlier generations once I've got the later ones right! Thanks again, much appreciated. Eve

Hi, Eve: This is not the best place to exchange a lot of information. Maybe you and Pete could let me have your e-mail addreses or maybe you could put messages up on the Kyffin Genealogical Forum on genealogy.com. I would very interested to hear the details of your respective connections to the Kyffins of Oswestry. Tony Kyffin
