Hi,
I've been following a family through the censuses but they were Joel and Emily/Amelia Jeeves of Sandy, Bedfordshire.
I just checked Family Search and find that Emily Cooper married Joel Jeeves 25 December 1841 Sandy Beds. It is anextracted record.
Would you like the census info?

best wishes

There are no Elley names in Sandy on the IGI, which has been extracted for the period in question.

I agree with Heywood's unwritten conclusion - that Joel and Emily/Amelia (Cooper) Jeeves were probably the parents of your Charles. Censuses show they had a son Charles born 1845.

Why he would have changed his name to Elley remains a mystery

Did the US Charles have a wife named Sarah (possibly Frost)?

Hi David,
yes I do think that this is Charles. I tracked him through and he then disappears. If I recall there was a possibility for Sarah on her own but 'married'.
I can give the various census information to famwiggs to confirm/discount the theory.

regards

Thank you to all i welcome every bit of the information--i have the census info on joel jeeves---
to add to this mystery my great grandfather Charles married Mary Hutton / Hooten and immigrated to usa in 1886 where my grandfather Charles was born in New Jersey in oct 1888.  one census from 1895 in New Jersey has Mary with 4/4 children (4 living out of 4) all the rest of the census have her as 1/1 only Charles.   The names used were father charles, mother mary, then children --john annie, william and charles........
mystery to be unfolded !!!

there is also a charles elley who died in England in 1879 who was married to a Mary (Hooten) and according to a contact he was told the story that after charles died Mary left home taking only baby william with her. Annie and John were left for family to raise. Mary went with her man friend to the states.

Maybe that is where Jeeves fits in and my grandfather Charles Elley who was born in 1888 maybe is really a Jeeves.  However another problem with that is that in White House New Jersey there is a stone marked Charles Elley jan 6 1845-1922 hmmmm
so 2 different charles' one died 1879 and the other 1922 hmmmm
one born in 1848 and the other 1845
