Sharing Useful Links: GERMANY and E. Europe
« on: Tuesday 14 September 04 07:51 BST (UK) »

While trying to find out more about my family in Germany, Poland, Austria, Slovakia, Ukraine etc, I have found various links which I thought could be useful to other researchers.

If you have researched in the UK you are used to 1881, 1901, freeCEN, freeBMD, etc etc.

THERE IS NOTHING LIKE THAT HERE !

Sorry for shouting, but I wanted you to hear that !  I can explain it in more detail, if anybody is interested, but maybe on another thread.

The biggest database for Germany I have found so far is GEDBAS at
http://gedbas.genealogy.net/index.jsp

The input mask is similar to familysearch, but no "soundex"  facility

Quick translation help:
Vorname = First name
Nachname = Surname
Ehepartner = spouse
Datum (Ereignis) = Date (event)
Ort (Stadt,Provinz,Land) = Place (town, district, state)
Suchen = Search
Zurücksetzen = Clear

There are over 2.2 million name from over 800,000 families here.

I'll add more links here later, especially database links !
Please add your links, too !

Here is another useful link: http://www.geneanet.org/

As far as I can tell (at the moment) it seems a way of bringing researchers into contact.

Type in the name you are searching for, either Quick Search, or various kinds of advanced search, and get a list of people found, with contact links.
If you then click on the contact link, you may get an e-mail address, or a link to their web-site, where you can go looking for more info.

Here's a link I found for Austria: http://www.aafhg.org.uk/

The site is still fairly new and is doesn't have "people data" on it, but it is expanding !  So let's wait and  see !

(edited on 20/9/04 after I realised I had forgotten the URL ! Ooops ! Sorry !)

Another one: the International Internet Genealogical Society

with BDM exchange for many countires,
e.g. Austria: http://iigs.rootsweb.com/bdm/austria/index.html
e.g. Germany: http://iigs.rootsweb.com/bdm/germany/index.html

Sounds good, but: "Last revised 11 April 2003" (DE) and. I would guesstimate about 3000 names on the German site and very few an the austrian site!

http://www.movinghere.org.uk/

This is a great web-site for all sorts of info. about jewish, caribbean, south asian and irish immigrants.

I've been looking through the jewish section, and there is a wealth of advice about how and where to look, and lots of informations about what records are kept and where, and also links to other useful sites.

Well worth looking at, if you are researching jewish ancestors from Europe.

http://www.movinghere.org.uk/galleries/roots/jewish/jewish.htm

I haven't checked out the other sections, but if they are anything like what I have seen so far from the jewish section, then they are well worth a look !

JDG just posted some history links on Emmigrants, which are well worth looking at for immigrants, too
http://www.rootschat.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=12419.0 and
http://www.rootschat.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=12420.0

The main site is http://www.zum.de/whkmla/region/region.html

If your ancestors came from Germany, Austro-Hungary, Russia or Poland, it is well worth looking into the history of the area, especially as the borders changed so often in the last 200 years.
It could be, that your russian ancestors are, in fact, polish, your polish ancestors are german, etc, etc.

This site is interesting if you have jewish ancestors, who originally came from Galicia (present day S. E. Poland and Western Ukraine):

http://www.jewishgen.org/Galicia/surdex/si_ma.htm

Enter a surname, and check out the links to various sites where this surname appears. (cemetry lists, trade directories, lists of taxpyaers, Holocaust survivors, etc, etc).

Also interesting:
in many entries, there is also a list of Surnames with the same Daitch-Mokotoff soundex !

At the top of the page there is another link, to http://www.jewishgen.org/Galicia/index.html

This has lots more Info. about Galicia, with links to online Databases !!

More on Galicia:  http://www.halgal.com/index.htm

Especially interesting: http://www.halgal.com/vitalrecords.html

"Tutorial of Vital Records
A detailed look at reading records in the standard format used from the late 18th century up to the middle of the 20th century.  Includes a step-by-step process of reading the records using numerous scanned images.  These tutorials are useful to genealogists researching any of the territory that was once controlled by the Austro-Hungarian Empire, including Western Galicians, Czechs, Slovaks, Hungarians, etc.).  Please be patient while the pages download."

Also of interest to anybody with R.Cath. records, as the tutorials include translation of all latin terms !
 Also lots on naming methodology, alternative names, etc

Also: http://www.bmi.net/jjaso/ for church record translations (Latin, Hungarian, Slovak and English)
Especially useful, generally, is http://www.bmi.net/jjaso/Latin_Terms_and_Phrases.html

Hi Bob in berlin - it's Heidi in Switzerland
Just wanted to say that the links you are supplying are very interesting. Most Swiss seem to originate somewhere else than Switzerland although my husband's lot are genuine Emmentaler, somewhere from a lonely farm in the middle of nowhere. The Swiss are so well organised that looking for ancestors is a bit boring. Official documents don't show the birthplace so much, but place of origin, so you know where to go back to. When I got married I automatically became a citizin of Langnau i/Emmental - other countries other customs.

Polish Roots:

I am adding a few sites I've found for searching for polish ancestors. I haven't had a chance to really go through them yet, so I won't comment (much) on them. Try them out and see, maybe you can add your comments to this thread.

http://www.polishroots.org/  This seems to be very informative, but it is an american site, written by and with emphasis on polish-americans
http://www.polishroots.org/genpoland/index.htm  This page has lots of "How to ..." info.

Another site with polish links: http://www.geocities.com/SiliconValley/Haven/1538/Polishpg.html

It's worth checking whether your polish ancestors were jewish, as there are (literally) hundreds of sites for jewish genealogy. But that could be another thread ....

http://www.genealogienetz.de/reg/SUD/sudet_en.html : Sudetenland which includes Bohemia
http://www.genealogienetz.de/reg/WPRU/wprus.html : West Prussia
http://www.westpreussen.de/englisch/ehome.htm : West Preussen
http://hinterpommern.de/Wegweiser/ : Hinterpommern

In some places it was customary to produce Ortsfamilienbücher (Local Heritage Books) with BMD info. of the inhabitants.

Check your luck here: http://db.genealogy.net/ofb/map.cgi?land=deutschland
to see if "your" Ortsfamilienbuch is on-line !

Another nice site for Galicia:  http://www.galiziengermandescendants.org/

The site has maps, history, lists ovf villages and names and much more. the links section also looks interesting, as it includes links to private web-pages for certain surnames or villages.

Hi Bob,

I was about to give up a search for a POW in the UK in WW1 named Oswin Ihle but your site has lots of new addresses so I will give it another try.  I am told he came from Chemnitz but not sure.  He lived in Manchester and Liverpool before internment.  Many thanks for all your info.
