1841 refuses to reveal him ... Grandsden is spelled Gransden, but of the 5 or 6 Thomas of the right age in the village, none are a mis-spelling of Lile ...

In fact there are no obvious variants in the whole PIECE number.

There is a Liles family in Great Gransby - John and Betsey - aged circa 25-30 with 2 very young children ...

Gransden only has 7 pages of enumeration, a quick trawl reveals nowt !

The IGI seems to have all the Baptism Registers (no marriages) and there are only female Liles & variants shown !

There is an IGI entry for 1819 Thomas Lyles, in Hertfordshire - Walkern ....

Hi SCR
Thanks for that info! I had the Free BMD entry and had hoped that would give me a clue to the wife!
Thwarted again!
I suspect in 1841 he was around Woodwalton conceiving an illegitimate child born Sept Qtr of that year!
I have a note there were about 6 Thomases in the village of Wood walton but no surnames! By the March census he might have already scarpered!
Thanks again for your help.
Thanks for your prompt reply.

Hi Marlene

How about
HO107/448/13 folio 29A
Ramsey Hunts
Thomas Loyal 20 MS Not born in county
in household of William Rose farmer

Might be a complete red herring but Liles said with a broad yokel accent might well come out Loyal!

Whilst Gt Gransden (my mother was born there!) was in Hunts, Lt Gransden a stone's throw down the road, was in Cambs.

BVRI shows a marriage at Gt Gransden on 31 Aug 1807 between Robert Liles and Elizabeth Christmas. They had a number of children baptised at Gt Gransden including Thomas Lisles on 15 Oct 1820, who was probably the one in the 1851 census.

1841 wasn't taken until June, not March, but Wood Walton and Ramsey are only 5 miles apart so it's possible that he was working in Ramsey and popping over to WoodWalton after work.

Regards

David

Marlene - had a day out to Huntingdon......

yours was easy ... marriage at Gt Grandsden on Dec 14 1841 of

Thomas Liles          age 21 bachelor - Servant - father Robert Liles
to  Susannah PARKIN age 20 spinster     no job   - no father

witnesses : Joseph Parkin & Elizabeth Parkin

so while I had the book out I noticed

on Dec 9th 1837 marriage of John Liles age 25 - groom - father Thomas Liles; to Betsy Dennis age 25,,,, witnesses Thomas Liles & Mary Liles

on Nov 10 1851 marriage of Stephen Liles of full age - father Robert Liles; to Jane Townsend of full age..... witness Isaac Townsend

Hi John
Many thanks for this - very unexpected but I'm most grateful as always.  Apologies for the delay in replying - my elderly mother had a bad fall on Monday and was released from hospital yesterday so I have been a wee bit busy!

I wish I had known you were going to Hunts I would have asked for  a more specific look up! I am trying to link this  Thomas Liles to  a birth which was registered of a Thomas Liles Scotney Sept Qtr 1841 14/152 Hunts.
I suspect it was an illegitimate birth and the mother would be Sarah Scotney and a baptism might have taken place in Upwood. Perhaps if you are visiting again???
If I am right Thomas (Liles) Scotney died 2 May 1848 in Upwood aged about 7years.
If it is at all possible could you look it up and get me photocopies scanned through?
My gratitude would know no bounds!!
I think you have my personal address.
Whatever many thanks for the above!
Regards
