Hi Lesley,
Sorry I don,t have the date of Provost Smith Anderson,s death.
I have a census return for Smith and Family.
1881 census
District: Kilsyth Dis. no 483
Book 5 page 6
Address: Meadowhead.
Smith Anderson head, mar,55, grain merchant & comm.agent.
Marion B,Wife, mar,55 b. Kirkintilloch
Jean, daur. UNM 25,b Gartsherrie
Robert. son.UNM 17, pupil teacher b. Kilsyth
Marion , daur. UNM 14 b. Kilsyth
James, son, 10 scholar b.croy
This is your Smith who died on 14th of June 1900 aged 74.
On his death cert. it states he was a colliery manager.
Smith and Marion had a son called Smith who was born 11th April 1861 born in Kilsyth.
Is it possible that your Smith,s son 'Smith junior' who would have been 39 at the time Smith was provost (1889-1891)
I reckon that is about the age of Provost Smith Anderson.
I will post a request for a look up of Provost Smith Anderson,s obituary under new topic?kilsyth , kind regards Billy.

The following doesn't answer your question but might fill in a few wee gaps (for one or two of the Smith Andersons)
MI from a stone in Kilsyth Cemetery:
"1871 Erected by Smith Anderson in memory of his daughter
JANET born 1853, died 1856
Also his son WILLIAM born 1839, died 1863
The above SMITH ANDERSON born 1826, died 1900
His daughter JEANIE born 1856, died 1901
His wife MARION BENNEY born 1826 died 1907
His son SMITH born 18??, died 1933?"
