John Donohue was born on the 1st of November 1888 the son of Rose Gallagher and James Donoghue who was a Farmer. According to the Baptism Certificate below, his baptism took place in the parish of Kiltane in the Diocese of Killala (Co. Mayo) on the 2nd Dec 1888. 

James and Rose had 11 children:  John, Sylvester, Anthony, Padraig, Michael, Martin, Thomas, Rose Ellen,David, James.

I would be grateful for any information regarding the family or some advice on how to start researching them.

Hi Jack
You probably know there aren't many Irish records on-line but I think I've found your family on the 1901 census for Mayo which is on the'Leitrim Roscommon'site after trying quite a few times! I selected just county Mayo and Sylvester as it was quite an unusual name and should have narrowed it down (other enumerators in household)and they came up under a different spelling-Donohoe.You have to try different combinations sometimes and not too much information.
I know you already have the children's names but it also has them living in a different parish.This may be helpful if you wanted to contact the parish priest.
Civil registration began in 1864 in Ireland so you could apply for a copy of the birth certificate for any of the children as you know the parents names.
You could  also try for the marriage certificate which should give the names of both  James and Rose's fathers plus witnesses.You will need as much info as possible- county/approx date/religion/names etc.
The main register office is in Roscommon but it,s sometimes quicker to apply to the local office(Mayo)who will accept cash=10 euros.

On the GRO site -click on'fees' then scroll down to find the addresses of the local offices.
If you want to go further back than 1864 I'm afraid you have to contact the parish(only Church of Ireland marriages go further back-to 1845).
Have a look at the information about records held at the National Library in Dublin I think the Latter Day Saints may hold records if you have a centre near you.
