CAn anyone give me any information on Enniskillen, Fermanagh. My ancestor came from there and I'm not sure where to begin looking but am interested in the area as well. Ancestor; Eliza GAllagher born 1836. She arrived in Australia as an assisted immigrant

Hiya Cajo,
There's a Genealogy board at the enniskillen.com site too. You should visit Co. Fermanagh sometime. It's one of the most beautiful counties in Ireland. There are great views form Cuilcagh Mountain.

The book about Enniskillen Royal School, better known as Portora Royal School, "The 1608 Royal Schools Celebrate 400 Years of History 1608-2008" has sold out so if your ancestors attended the school and you haven't purchased a copy the Enniskillen Library wiil probably be prepared to do the occasional look up. www.portoraroyal.co.uk/portal.aspx

Civil registration in Ireland of births, deaths and Catholic marriages began 1864 (other marriages from 1845). For earlier dates you need to search for church records (if they still exist). To do so you need to know the family's religion and where they lived (parish if not townland, not just the county). In the case of Eliza Gallagher she may have been from the town of Enniskillen are from farther away but listed Enniskillen as it was the nearest large town. To try and find where she was from in Ireland you should search things like death certificates, marriage certificates, etc. to see if there are any clues.
