My GGgrandfather (Richard Lawton b. 1845 in Manchester) does not show up on the 1871, 1881 or 1891 census for England but his wife and children do. Then, out of the blue, he pops up in the 1901 census.
My Ggrandfather was born in 1870 so Richard must have been around up until at least 1869. Any ideas where I can search for him
Do convicts show up on the census? Where can I get information on transportation of criminals from England?
I am really bemused by his sudden reappearance
Any assistance will be greatly appreciated.

Researching - Lawton in Cheshire, Staffordshire & Lancashire; Bissette in Ireland; Bannigan in Scotland & Ireland: Goodwin in Cheshire & Staffordshire.
It seems a little unlikely he was a convict, as sending Convicts to NSW stopped in 1842, although I believe some were sent later as "exiles" - they were given "tickets of leave" provided they "migrated" to Australia. WA did take convicts from 1850 - 1868. As he was in England until 1870, this would mean he wasn't transported.
Does his profession on the 1901 census give any clues as to where he may have been at census time.
He could have been a free immigrant to Oz, Canada or US and perhaps his wife didn't want to join him ( or vice versa).
