1851/61 census lookup - Moray
« on: Sunday 17 September 06 16:18 UTC (UK) »

Could anyone do a lookup in the 1851 and/or 1861 census for a John Cremonini, b.1816. In the 1841 census he is shown at Drainie.
Any information would be appreciated.

Thanks joebhoy - I have now been able to view the original handwritten 1841 census return and I am now quite convinced that the surname was not 'cremonini'. Can't explain why it was indexed as such though.

Hi Joebhoy
Thanks for your interest and offer of help. My best guess at the name is Cumming but as always with unclear Victorian handwriting the more I look at it the more confusing it looks.
I have attached a jpg - what do you think.
Mike

Hi Joe,
Could this be the John you are looking for? This is taken from 1851, so the age matches.
Mike sorry if I jumped in! I saw the post and was bored so I had a wee look.
Susan.

hi Susan, Hi Joe
I really do appreciate the time you have both taken but I think this query is now 'dead'.
When the 1841 census for Scotland first became available on Ancestry I was very interested to find John Cremonini in the index, hence my first post. I subsequently obtained a copy of the original handwritten return and could see immediately that the surname had been mis-indexed.
Thanks again for your help.

In the 1841 census 'M. S.' stands for 'Male Servant'.
