Just checked my latest browser stats for website. In the last week, the % using each of the following browsers:

IE6             83%
Opera 9.01    8%
FF 1.5.0        5%
IE7               2%
Opera 7.54    1%
FF 1.5          1%

In previous weeks I know I've had Apple and Netscape.

Query - what does AOL use - I've got that somewhere and I did test before I put it up for the first time.

Another variable is monitor resolution. Luckily I have 1280 x 1024 and 1024 x 768 - I gave an old 15 ins away!  Best to centre in browser, else you get that right hand blank space. I changed over a couple of weeks ago.

AOL generally use (or they did the last time I looked) a variant of IE.

Personally I try to design a site for 800 x 600

Yes - I gather that was an early standard that has been abandoned now. I'm sure someone on here told me  Huh Huh Huh

Gadget

PS - I've got it in a PM, so won't quote it, but it definitely says that the prof  standards are now mainly to design to 900

That was what we learnt on our course as well so you are right.  However I always do 800 because I've got a small screen and I hate horizontal scrolling!  Sad

Hi Gadget,

Do you get anything useful out of your stats!!  Grin Grin Grin

I was wondering about putting something on my website ( did I tell you the address!!) - but thought I would never use all the information provided.

The only part which might be useful is which of my 30 odd "special" features was read the most.

Cheers

Most display screens used in academia and business are seventeen to nineteen inches (forty-three to forty-eight centimeters) in size, and most are set to display an 800 x 600-pixel screen. Web page graphics that exceed the width dimension of the most common display screens look amateurish and will inconvenience many readers by forcing them to scroll both horizontally and vertically to see the full page layout. It's bad enough to have to scroll in one (vertical) direction; having to scroll in two directions is intolerable.

While standards do alter and individuals do make changes to their systems  its horses for courses and the designer (IMHO) should always try to fit their particular target audience not make that audience fit their own ideas/designs.

The best encapsulation of that I heard was during a discussion about some houses that had won architectural awards - one resident scathingly suggested that the architect should be forced to live in his own creation for 6 months.... I don't think the offer was ever taken up  Grin

It's quite interesting for novelty value Keith and for those of us who're nosey  Wink

You can get referrals, entry paths, length of stay, repeat visits, etc., etc. plus all the stuff I've put up here.

Those with unusual ISPs I can identify as individuals usually but not sure about one elderly residential care place in the States - now how did they find me  Roll Eyes Roll Eyes Roll Eyes

Gadget

(here I am trying to get my trees up, answer my great nephew's e-mail questions about which medieval Kings and Knights he's descended from and deal with the plumber and Tomkin  Cool Cool Cool - coffee calls )

PS - anyone know what 'Provider Local Registry' is as an ISP - they went in via my profile Huh

The thing is Falkyrn, even if it's designed to the resolution standards, etc. , if it's full of flashing gizzmos, poor visual design and poor content, then it's not worth having.

Gadget you beat me to it!!!

I would just add that I think it is more important to make your web viewable by a variety of browsers rather than worry about the screen resolution or am I talking out of turn.

Architects, yes we would like the architect who designed our work office to come and spend a summer in the glaring sunlight through the pointless skylights and enjoy the 40C temperatures!!!!

I think that if people (the users) are interested enough, they'll read what is up whatever. I certainly do.

However, it's up to us to make it as easy (user friendly) as possible for them to view our sites. Some of the 'professionally' designed ones are pretty bad because many web designers are not trained visually. Many have the technical knowledge but no artistic/graphic skills. A pity  Sad

Saying this, I'm not sure if my original question about web crawlers has been answered yet  Huh Huh Huh

Don't think so ..  Wink

I agree with you concerning flashing gizmos etc ...... but the attention span of the average site viewer can be interesting in itself ... often measured in seconds and not very many of them  Grin

A family history site is obviously different and it comes down to what I said about designing for your intended target audience but no matter how good your information is poor design can drive away potential viewers ..... I was looking at a site the other day which was full of information I wanted to read but the design was so awful and a strain on the eyes that I cheated and stripped out the content before reading it offline.

Think we're agreed on that Falkyrn.

The Guardian site has won many awards and is good. I don't like the BBC site   (too busy)or the National Archives (same)..........

Scotland's People isn't very good either and the Welsh Nat Library site is difficult to navigate...............

Most of all I don't like flashing gizzmos  Sad
