Oh I do like the 'deep invisible web' and 'politeness policy' - makes them sound almost human
Thanks for the link. Really, it's not worth worrying too much then. My hit rate is quite high at the moment, so.........................
We'll see what the future holds.

Whats wrong with a small "site updated on xyz date" at the bottom of the home page?
I do this on my website (see my siggy for link) along aside the copyright stuff, all at the bottom, and I dont think it looks funny or out of place.
Its just a few very small typed lines. Most people never scroll down far enough to see it anyway.
Alternatively there is nothing wrong with a "what's new" or "stop press" page either.

Nothing wrong at all BD
It's how the the web crawlers identify updates that's the issue.

Portrait of the genealogist as a young man

Just checked my latest browser stats for website. In the last week, the % using each of the following browsers:
IE6 83% Opera 9.01 8% FF 1.5.0 5% IE7 2% Opera 7.54 1% FF 1.5 1%
In previous weeks I know I've had Apple and Netscape.
Query - what does AOL use - I've got that somewhere and I did test before I put it up for the first time.
Another variable is monitor resolution. Luckily I have 1280 x 1024 and 1024 x 768 - I gave an old 15 ins away! Best to centre in browser, else you get that right hand blank space. I changed over a couple of weeks ago.

I think your quick sample of browsers and screen resolutions are pretty representative. I've been using Google Analytics for over 3 months now, and I drew off a number of stats that you and others might find helpful in terms of the characteristics of visitors etc, to inform website design.
Here goes (data based on 878 visitors):
Operating System Windows 96.81% Macintosh 2.62% Linux 0.46% (unknown) 0.11% Browser
Internet Explorer 84.17% Firefox 12.19% Safari 2.05% Opera 0.80% Netscape 0.68% SonyEricssonZ530i [!] 0.11%
Screen resolution 1024x768 54.21% 800x600 17.54% 1152x864 10.25% 1280x1024 9.45% 1280x800 3.64% 1280x768 0.80% 640x480 0.57% 1280x960 0.57% 1920x1200 0.57% 1024x640 0.46% 1440x900 0.34% 1400x1050 0.34% 1680x1050 0.34% 1280x854 0.23% 1600x1200 0.23% 1344x840 0.11% 176x220 0.11% 1280x720 0.11% 656x496 0.11%
(Never knew there were so many combinations of screen resolutions)
Screen colours
32-bit 82.46% 16-bit 14.81% 24-bit 2.16% 8-bit 0.57%
Connection "Speed" Cable/DSL 75.74% Dialup 15.26% Unknown 5.01% Corporate 3.99%
(Interesting that at least 4% of my visitors are doing it on the firm's time!)
Referrals (Top 15 only!) (direct)[(none)] 21.3% google[organic] 20.8% rootschat.com[referral] 17.5% yahoo[organic] 9.6% kindredtrails.com[referral] 4.7% my2.statcounter.com[referral] 4% ask[organic] 3.6% msn[organic] 3.2% british-genealogy.com[referral] 2.3% ukgid.com[referral] 1.8% mandywillard.co.uk[referral] 1.4% cyndislist.com[referral] 1.25% a*cestryaid.co.uk[referral] 0.8% forum.yourfamilytreemag.co.uk[referral] 0.7% etherington.rootschat.net[referral] 0.7%
NB1 - These are percentage of visitors, not percentage of pageloads
NB2 - I assume "organic" means search engine-sourced
Country of origin (Top 10 only!) United Kingdom 63.1% United States 18.1% Australia 8.8% Canada 2.4% (not set) 2% Satellite Provider 0.8% France 0.8% New Zealand 0.8% Spain 0.5% South Africa 0.5%
For those of you who think I am sad (a poll would probably show at least 95%!) to collect and post this, I can assure you I don't aim to make a habit of it! Perhaps next time will be in June 2007 on the first anniversary of my Googleanalytics account!
Anyway, hope they are of interest.

AOL generally use (or they did the last time I looked) a variant of IE.
Forgot about this query - my last AOL visitor was using IE 6.

Makes very interesting reading. Sad to see IE is still coming top! Yes, but of my visitors, almost 15% of people using a Windows operating system have opted to use an alternative browser in Firefox, rather than the IE package which is the default for Windows. Based on my data, that's quite a snub for Microsoft and IE.
Will have to see what happens when IE7 is formally launched (I'm using the Beta version at the moment - because I want to make a decision whether to switch to Firefox, and there's no point if IE claws back some brownie points as a result of the new version; the jury here is still out).
If I'd draw any conclusions from all this, at minimum, test your website for IE and Firefox, at a resolution of 800 x 600 minimum, with 16 bit colours. And for Mac users too! Also have to remember that a significant minority still use Dial-up rather than ADSL.
