Died on route to Australia - help please
« on: Monday 02 October 06 13:19 BST (UK) »

John Williamson b.1853 England was going to Australia to start a new life and would send for wife and child when settled.  Apparently he died on the way.  In the GRO marine deaths index I have found two possibles, one on the Madura in 1879 age given as adult, and one on the Lauderdale in 1878 aged 28.  His widow remarried in 1880.
Can someone point me in the right direction to find routes and passenger lists for these two vessels to confirm his identity?  Would a death certificate have been sent home to the widow? How would she have been able to remarry without some sort of proof of his death?  All I know about him is from his marriage cert, b.1852/3 occupation blacksmith father William.
Hope someone can help me -  with thanks, Barbara

As to how she would have been able to remarry - she would have declared herself a widow at remarriage, there was no requirement in those days for proof.  So whether he had died at sea, upon reaching the other side, or his wife simply didn't hear from him, for the purposes of remarriage this didn't matter.

http://www.biship.com/fleetlists/fleet1870-1879.htm - the Madura seems to have been a British India ship.

I can find some later references to a Lauderdale that went to NZ (much later), and one reference to a Lauderdale possibly lost in the China Sea around 1877:

I do have to wonder if the 1878 Lauderdale registration was a delayed death registration for someone on the lost ship, or if this ship was later recovered and was on another voyage in 1878, or if it's referring to another Lauderdale altogether.  Can't spot anything for The Times in 1878 shipping news for Lauderdale (1879 search for Madura shows up several notices as it passed through European and Asian ports).

Hi jorose,

Thanks very much for looking those up for me, looks as if his death is going to remain a mystery for a bit longer, but at least I know now that his widow was able to marry without proof of his death, very interesting.

Many thanks, Barbara

John's death could have been registered in Australia if an OZ point of embarkment was the first after the death on voyage.  This was the case in the early days of migration but I am not sure if this happened in the 1870s.

The death certificate for my ancestor who died in 1850s gave heaps of info including latitude and longitude for place of death - off the coast of Africa.

I shall lookup some OZ state records for you.  Gazania

Marine deaths were reported on the NSW registry well into the 1890s but there is no John.  But in 1886:

14631/1886  WILLIAMSON, William
father:  James
mother: died at sea (probably refers to Wm's death as this is the only marine death recorded on the index.)

District: marine

Thanks gazania for looking that up, perhaps he didn't die but made a new life for himself without sending for his wife and child, I can find no trace in England of him after 1875, nor of a Robert Williamson possible brother to John after 1871, they may have emigrated together.  I'm basing the date of his death on the fact that he was married in 1875, his son was born later that year, and Ruth remarried in July 1880. It's so difficult to know when it's just a family story passed down several generations.
Many thanks for your time and interest,

Hi Barbara

I had a look on the NSW site for shipping details - but as yet there are very few ships in 1879 & 1880 transcribed for unassisted immigrants.

http://mariners.records.nsw.gov.au/

On most of the shipping lists it details births and deaths (sometimes just numbers but sometimes also names).

The Lauderdale appears in some earlier years lists. As the site is updated you may get some information. (A trip to the NSW archives could get it sooner)

Thanks Trish, it's a good site, or will be for me a bit later on, sadly as I'm in UK I won't be able to get to the NSW archives
Thanks for your help, Barbara
