Hi, I want to start a website all about the wonderful people that make up my family tree Can I use Frontpage to do this? Also how does Rootschat keep a site going if it's free (sorry I'm one of these people who doesn't like parting with their cash!)? Is it ok to use material from other other sources, or do you have to quote it with copyright? Also can you see how many hits you're getting? What is the difference between something like this and these "spaces" that are cropping up? I really just want to go into the study of my family names and their relevance to the East Midlands, but will probably include info and photos on GGrandparents as there's less to worry about privacy wise! Can viewers gain any info about you and your computer other than what you put on the site..again I want to protect my privacy?

You will need to say that something is copyrighted, only if it is of course. Most of the time this includes information from censuses (you'll notice many of us have a copyright notice for census transcripts at the bottom of our posts).
From what I understand, RootsChat gets a bit of money everytime someone clicks on one of the ads at the top. This helps pay for the upkeep of the site. Having free sites available will increase visitors to RootsChat because of the small ad they place on each page on your site. There are plenty of sites which offer free web hosting but RootsChat websites are specifically for family/local history.
Here's the RootsChat website privacy policy:
"PRIVACY POLICY: Your personal details or email address will NOT be given out to any third parties. RootsChat however have the obligation to reveal your identity (or any information we have about you) to the relevant authorities in the event of a complaint or legal action arising from any information contained in your website."

This is a complex subject and you have raised a number of issues.
If you are a complete novice you may want to download Personal Ancestry File (PAF) from the LDS http://www.familysearch.org/ and export your GEDCOM file from your existing faamily tree software and import it into PAF. PAF allows you to build a simple website. You can select who you want to include on the website. You can then look at the layout and decide whether it is acceptable on your home PC before uploading it to rootschat.
In terms of privacy - if you want to share your information with others then you are going to have to divulge some information about yourself and others. If you are very worried about privacy then do not start a website.
