William SMALLMAN c1870
« on: Monday 18 September 06 11:38 BST (UK) »

I've been contacted by a lady who's trying to trace William Smallman born c1870 Ross, Herefordshire. He was a blacksmith. I feel sure he's connected to my Smallman family somehow but we have very little to go on.

William is on the 1901 census in Mid Glamorgan with the Morgan family as a lodger. His birthplace is stated as Ross, Herefordshire. He married Dulcie Davies 9/1900/Pontypridd dist. In 1901 she was living with her widowed father. Can't trace him on the 1881 census.

Is anyone able to trace him on the 1891 census?

EBN,
Thanks for your reply. The first 2 Williams are in my tree already. I haven't found out anything about the second William, other than where he fits into the tree...am begining to wonder if it's him. He was born in Foy, Herefordshire, but I guess he could have put down his birthplace as Ross in the 1901 census. A little more hunting to be done I think!

Misled you - it was Charles not a James born in 1866 to James and Eleen. On the 1891 census Charles aged 60, Ellen aged 59 and Charles aged 25 are all in Upton Bishop. James is down as born in Ross, and Ellen in St Margarets

on 1881 census I have found William aged 46 a blacksmith and his wife Matilda in Chantry Hundred of Greytree [which is the hundred for Ross on Wye] census area Foy.

Did they have a son called William ?
It seems a strange coincidence for this William  to be a blacksmith and for this otehr William Smallman to also be a blacksmith and not at least related in someway. Balcksmiths seved an apprenticeship with another blacksmith [as they still do] for 5 years or more - so was this a son or a nephew or a cousin that was taught the trade.

Have you traced your William in the 1871 census. I do not have that but it would be interesting to see his household in 1871. I see he was married in 1861, so there could be childeen in those 10 years.

Ok....
John and Elizabeth Smallman had amongst other children, a William b c1869 in Foy, Herefordshire. The William and Matilda Smallman you found are brother and sister-in-law to John and Elizabeth Smallman.

James (and Ellen) Smallman is cousin to John and William....

I have William Smallman (b c1869 Foy) on the 1881 census, still in Foy. The 1891 census shows some of the family still in Foy, Mum Elizabeth (Dad John had died), and 2 children, Mary and John jnr. I've traced all of the children on the 1901 census EXCEPT for the elusive William!

When contacted by this lady, I wondered if her William and mine were one and the same. She has few details, but thinks HER William was on the 1901 census birthplace Ross!

Confused? You soon will be....Thanks for trying!

P.S

William and Matilda Smallman don't seem to have had any children, I have them on earlier censuses. This family is huge and getting more confusing by the day!

If William and Matilda were childless then perhaps he took on a relative to become a blacksmith.

Are they on the 1871 census ?

Could be...hadn't thought of that.
1871 census, William and Matilda have Williams brother James aged 25and Samuel Wilkes, an apprentice.
1891 census, William and Matilda have mother-in-law, 2 neices and James Winter an apprentice.
1901 census william and Matilda have one neice.
