Tyler, 1851 /1841 Deptford census. COMPLETED
« on: Monday 18 September 06 14:06 UTC (UK) »

I've received a request by email, and I'm reproducing it here:  Can anyone help? I'm going to send them a link to here as reply, so they can see it unfold (Hopefully).

Thanks,
Pauline

William Henry Tyler, born Mar 22, 1832 born in Deptford.  The IGI index indicates his father is William, his mother Eliza.  I have no other information on his father or mother, and am very interested to find occupations, ages at time of census, and, Eliza’s maiden name.  Their place of birth would be most helpful

I have found a number of entries from St. Paul ’s in Deptford for possible siblings:

Henry Tyler (no b. date)

Mary Ann Elizabeth 30 Sept 1826

Eliza Jane Elizabeth 17 Mar 1828

Elizabeth 16 Sept 1832  [this would seem to be in conflict with William Henry being born in Mar 1832. . .]

I believe a census entry may help me sort out the question of the Elizabeth born 16 Sept 1832 belonging to this family.  I would appreciate it if you could check to see if this family is noted in the 1851 census.  William Henry Tyler bo 1832 is my g-g-grandfather, married to Mary Ann Marriott  at St. Mary’s church Jan 20, 1856, so I believe he would still be living with his parents in 1851.  William became a ship’s engineer, including time with the RN in the 1850’s-1860’s.

I can't find an exact match, although I have found a William and Eliza Tyler in Kent in 1851, albeit in Folkestone. They only had a 7 year old daughter called Elizabeth living with them.

In 1841, I again couldn't find a match.

Is this them?

London 1851 census HO107, 1585, 121b

4 Edwards Court, Deptford St Nicholas, Greenwich

William Tyler, Head, M, 47, Mariner, Devon Pourtsmouth ?(definitely not Plymouth)
Eliza, Wife, M, 44, Kent Deptford
Caroline, D, U, 21
Elizabeth, D, U, 19
William Tyler, S, U, 16
Huh? Richard? R, S, 12
John, S, 10
Peter, S, 5
Eliza, D, 1

All kids born Deptford. Sorry cannot read all of it - out of practice! Perhaps somebody else can have a look? It's page 226 of the document. You may need to post to London look-ups.

Let me know if Eliza turns out to be a Jones or Belson!!!!

Cheers, Kate

I think the missing name is Samuel.   At least one of them has a middle initial and I reckon the enumerator porbably wrote Tyler in as a middle name by mistake when he should have put something else...

Hi Kate

Deptford was in Kent until 1889 so it's fine on this board Wink

I'm the originator of the query and thanks to you all for efforts so far.  In the family record noted, would Portsmouth be his place of birth?

Upon additional consideration, the family record noted in the earlier response has a fundamental disconnect in that the William Henry Tyler I am looking for was born March 22, 1832 and would be age 19 in the 1851 census rather than age 16.  I do believe that there were two families "William & Eliza" in the St. Paul's records and I think the family I am looking for is not the one noted at 4 Edwards Court.

Hi

It could easily be Portsmouth - I've seen worse county attributions!

I am only looking at the London census as Deptford & Greenwich were both included in this in 1851, and these are all I have access to at present.
The only other Wm Tylers I could see living in the area are one who is 17, occ: Tinman's son, born in Woolwich and living in Greenwich, and a 16 y-o who was born in Peckham and living in Greenwich.

This is quite an old request so I'm not sure whether you now have the information you require but there is this family in 1841 (would appear to be the same family as found in 1851 above though) Undecided

1841

New St, Deptford St Nicholas

Wm TYLER 35 stoker b.Kent
Mary 30 b.Kent
Caroline 11 b.Kent
Betsy 9 b.Kent
Wm 6 b.Kent
Henry 4 b.Kent
Rich'd 1 b.Kent
Betsy 15 b.Kent

I'm the originator of that message on the Tylers.  Thanks for all the advice.  Just wanted to provide feedback on the success to which you all contributed.

The census posting on the 1851 entry was the correct one.  After more research, it turns out that Eliza's maiden name was Eliza Fender (b. 1805-1807 in Deptford).  William born 1803 in Portsmouth and bapt. at St. John, Portsea, had 2 brothers Henry and Joseph.

Children: Mary Ann Elizabeth; Eliza Jane Elizabeth; Caroline Maria; Elizabeth; William Henry; Henry James; Samuel Richard aka Richard; Peter; John; and Eliza Sarah all born between 1826-1849.

Thanks to all for help, advice.  Still working Tyler and Marriott families in Deptford area.
