Help to identify location (COMPLETED)
« on: Monday 18 September 06 18:23 UTC (UK) »

Can anyone shed any light upon the location given in this 1851 census entry as place of birth.
I have Sutherlandshire but am unable to make out the second word.

Robert McKay (or Mackay) born Sutherlandshire circa 1804 ... the second image provides handwriting comparisons from areas already identified.

Could it be Farr.

It is a Sutherland parish. Are there any other F's or rr's on the page?

I've had a look at the ones on IGI from Farr ...... unfortunately they have that Robert married to a Joan ... mines married a Mary Reid in New Kilpatrick (although given that branches track record, multiple marriages are a distinct possibility )

Another one on there claims to have traced the mackay lineage back to circa 500 AD .....  Lips Sealed

I read it as :-

Sutherlandshire Farm
Dumbartonshire   New Kilpatrick
Do. (=Ditto)  Old Kilpatrick
Lanarkshire   Glasgow.

I have repeated the lines exactly as they appear in the image.
