I think we are OK now!
Sounds as though you need to start saving for certificates!

Hi Dave
Have you been looking at the images of the actual marriage index and did you check every quarter for a good range of years
http://content.ancestry.co.uk/iexec/?htx=List&dbid=8965&offerid=0%3a7858%3a0
If so then, yes, there is every possibility that there was no marriage
Would they have definitely married in England or Wales ie. they couldn't have been in Scotland or abroard with the services etc.
Have you found an earlier marriage for your dad
Casalguidi
Have any of you other Rootschatters looked for this marriage as well

Ancestry purport to have the same raw data on film/fiche from the GRO as the other commercial sites .... their 'uploading' and minimal indexing has a few problems however - for example they deal arbitrarily with handwritten additions to a page, which can throw the indexing out ...
Bottom line, when you display a year or range of years, check first that all 4 quarters are there ... if not, when in an adjacent Quarter, click on the 'breadcrumbs' links at the top to get you into the Year, Quarter and Surname 1st letter you want, then 'jump' to the right area - its not brilliant, but it works !

sorry, its techno geek-speak for the links on Ancestrt above the image
For example
You are here: Search > England & Wales, Marriage Index: 1837-1983 > 1866 > Q4-Oct-Nov-Dec > B
Breadcrumbs cos you 'follow a trail' to where you are in the site !

Hi Dave
Searching for divorce records is rather more complex.
Quote from the National Archives Information Leaflet
1938-date: most have been destroyed. A very small annual sample has been kept, subject to 30-year closure: the sample is searchable on the Catalogue ( www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue), using the surname as the search term and restrict the search to J 77. A further 2% random sample is in J 132 , for cases where the Official Solicitor acted for one of the parties: these are subject to a 75 year or longer closure. Case files contain the petition, copies of any relevant certificate, affidavits - and also a further copy of the decrees nisi and absolute (from about 1870). Most have been stripped of other material, but a few were kept complete, to show all stages of a suit. If there is a previous or later petition, a cross-reference is given on the file cover. http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/RdLeaflet.asp?sLeafletID=53&j=1
To search the catalogue, use the series code J77 and surname as the keyword http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/
There are a number of queries (and answers) regarding divorce in the common room http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/board,46.0.html
To find some of these, go to the link I have just typed, click the word "subject" at the top of the topic headings (this will sort the topics into alphabetical order) and topic titles where divorce is the first word will be on page 21. Alternatively, use the Rootschat search button to search for the word divorce.
Hope this helps
