Hi, Janan, My curiosity has got the better of me again - you know how it is when you begin to chew over an aspect of family history... I'd really like to know whether either or both of Joseph Walter and his mother Elizabeth were brought from Kent after their respective deaths, to be buried in their father's/husband's grave. The headstone in the grounds of the Independent Chapel in Melbourn certainly gives all three names, but I'd really like to be able to discover the actual burial records for 1880 and 1885 as confirmation, if they indeed still exist. I'm contacting the present-day custodians of this particular chapel, which is still in use. Very best wishes, keith

Hi Keith I hope you are able to find out - what does it actually say on gravestone? I wouldn't like to think of either Elizabeth or Joseph lying alone in Kent - and there not even mine. Jan

Jan, Here is the M.I. in its entirety, complete with mistakes, which I've indicated by "sic" in brackets... "In memory of Robert Carter late of The Lawn Melbourne (sic) Cambridgeshire and Minories London who departed this life on 3rd day of December 1870 in the 83rd year of his life. Also Elizabeth wife of the above Robert Carter who died 8th August 1885 aged 86 years. Also of Joseph Walter Carter youngest son of the above born 9th April 1840 (sic) died 13th September 1880 in his 41st (sic) year."
J.W.C. of course born 9th April 1839; Melbourn is the correct spelling for the place in Cambs. keith

I would always have assumed all names on a gravestone were in the grave but as they both died in Kent I can see how this now becomes ambiguous. Hope you are able to find out. Jan
