Thanks very much Ticker, greatly appreciated. Another question - not stretching the friendship I hope. On my Granda's death cert. the informant was my Dad (since passed on).He gave Granda's date of birth as 3rd August 1899, place Bladon on Tyne, Tyne & Wear.I have looked on the Civil Registration Index and found a Robert DODDS there born 1899 Sept qtr at Gateshead. Vol 10a page 1021.All looks good so far.I would like to order the cert but I am being cautious. There is also a Robert DODDS March qtr 1898 and March qtr 1899.all at Gateshead. I would like to "assume" that my Dad was correct but is there anywhere that the parents details can be confirmed before ordering a cert?(He is not listed on familysearch). Appreciate any input from you or other "chatters". Regards marilyn in Oz

Hi John and thanks so much for your email, sorry it has taken me so lonng to reply.I only have my Granda's birth details from info given on his death by my Dad(now deceased).I also have Granda's marriage cert showing his father as Robert.I have just bought some vouchers for the 1901 census,so will try and establlish his address. His marriage cert shows his address as 32 Ash Street, Winlaton.I visited the State Library in Melb. last week and was able to find my Dad's two sisters on the GRO's, Elsie and Cynthia DODDS mothers name LONGSTAFFE registered Gateshead.also two other girls with the same parents surnames in South Shields, how uncommon is that I wonder.I dont think they would be mine even though Granda worked for the railways and would possibly travel around a bit,I suppose his wife would stay put.I am currently transcribing the 1861 census for FreeCen for parts of Gateshead,so will keep my eyes open for any DODDS' then. Thanks again John.Good luck with your research too,let me know if I can be of any help.

Just a note for others, as you will already be aware of this..
A posting on the DUR-NBL board has links to a website. Excerpts and address follow:
I am relatively new to this list but am doing research on a number of families, particularly the LONGSTAFF line. I have traced my family back to Thomas Longstaff (1786-1862) and Jane Reay (1786-1864) but have not been able to find Thomas Longstaff's parents or birth information (I can go back about a generation earlier for Jane REAY). Thomas Longstaff was a tanner and later had a pub (the Prince Albert) and museum in Morpeth. The field in Morpeth where he put hides to dry is still known as "Tommy's Field." He is sometimes listed as a native of Durham but I do not know if this means the city or county. I have been working on family genealogy with several active researchers in England and Australia and making good progress. I would love to hear from people working on LONGSTAFF, WILLIS or GRAY genealogies. Some of what we have found (but not information about living individuals nor copies of certificates) is available on-line. More detailed information (including information about living individuals) is available only to members of our extended family. But you can check this out at
http://www.longstaff.info.
