Hi, I'm having real problems finding out about this side of the family. I have got back as far as Joseph Swift born 1847 to Joseph and Mary Ann Price in Sneinton. Joseph Snr. was a musician/professor of the violin. But I can't find anything about him....when he was born where he was born....who his parents were. Can anyone help? He died 24th Jan 1859. Thanks.

Hi Valda, Yes that's what I get too so must be him. He states his father as a Joseph Swift, Frameworker but I can't find anything that matches. Considering the baptism says he was baseborn either Ann is lying about her surname or her son is lying about his father!

Marriage certificates are the most unreliable records to trust. If a person was illegitimate and marrying away from where they were known then you have to expect them to say they were legitimate. There were no checks so why would they admit something like that in front of officials if they didn't have to. It was common practice.
You really need to look at the Shepshed parish registers to follow the Swift family to see if this is a possibility for your Joseph. If the church in Shepshed thought Ann wasn't married they would make it apparent on the baptismal entries. If she was local then her circumstances would be well known. The other baptisms might indicate at least a father for one of her sons - the Allen middle name might indicate his surname.
Leicestershire Record Office could also hold 'Bastardy Orders' if Ann at any point needed the equivalent of a maintenance order.

Hi Valda, On Joseph's Baptism he and his brother William are desribed as "base born" which I'm told means illegitimate. I did wonder if the Allen in George's name was their fathers surname too. How do bastardy orders work then? Are they easy to get hold of?

Bastardy orders were part of the poor law system
http://www.mdlp.co.uk/resources/general/poor_law.htm
If Ann Swift's family were able to support her, or she could support herself, or she was living with the man or men who fathered her children, then maintenance would not be claimed so no Bastardy order or orders. If this wasn't the case then if such an order has survived it will be held at Leicestershire Record Office. You will have to inquire there. Many county record offices have such orders, along with settlement and removal orders indexed so can tell you relatively easily whether anything exists or not.
