Can someone possibly help with information on gravestones for Sudbury All Saints: Wm. Medcalf 1855-1931 & Emma Theobald Medcalf 1859-1943? and Long Melford: Clement Theobald 1805-1882 & Susannah (Howell) Theobald
Is anyone willing to take digital photos of the above stones?
If the Medcalfs died in Sudbury in the 1930s and 40s then they are probably buried in the borough cemetery in Newton Road. This was opened in the 1850s. As for Long Melford churchyard, it is BIGGGGGG
Thanks Sue, do you know the name of the cemetery in Newton Road? The Wm. Medcalf family lived on Ballingdon Road. Nathan, the father of Wm. died in 1860 ... would he likely be buried same place? And is there only one cemetery in Melford?
As far as I know its just called Sudbury Cemetery. I do know the earlier registers for burials up to about 1907 are held a Suffolk Record Office at Bury St. Edmunds. From then and up till now I believe they are held at Sudbury Town Hall (can't be absolutely certain). You can contact them from this link.
click on council at the side and there is a phone number and email address.
I checked the NBI and see there is a Nathan Medcalf buried in Sudbury cemetery in 1863 aged 34yrs, is he yours.
The Long Melford churchyard has all the old part, some of which is left uncut for the wildlife and such and there is also a piece of ground attached where current burials take place.
The last time I checked in Sudbury Cemetery for someone it took four visits each lasting about about an hour to find the actual headstone (and there was snow on the ground and it was very chilly). The one thing I did discover is that the RC part of the cemetery is easy to find
I used to live in Long Melford - and dear Suepip is correct, it is a large churchyard, and Long Melford Holy Trinity is a very large church (where both my children were christened) - do have a look http://www.suffolkchurches.co.uk/Longmelford.htm

Every time I find an ancestor, I have to find two more !
Pendle, Stygall, Pipe, Fruer, Bridges, Fisk in Suffolk Bridges in Derby FULKER in Berkshire then Hammersmith/Barnes LND Murray, Clancy, Broker, Hoskins, Wilson, Sale in MDX/LND Gt-Grandfather Michael Wilson born Cork, lived Fulham LND - arrived Boston USA 1889 - what happened next?
oh well ... it is rather like finding your ancestor's name and the information is torn from the page.
The Theobald fam was baptised in 'Christ Church' Long Melford. Thanks Sue & SM for your help, spent a lot of time pouring over and enjoyed the Suffolk and Holy Trinity links.
I have tromped through the snow drifts here looking for graves as well ... definitely a fair-weather addiction.
Of course, the Theobald family that still live in the village are leading lights of the United Reform church in the village --- Christ Church
I will send you a PM with the email address of the present Minister, you can contact the church direct.

Are you still after a picture of the Theobalds gravestone, as I found it today. Its in very good condition. Let me know and I can nip back and take a photo for you.
Thanks very much for the kind offer Sue ... I do have a photo, a distant cousin emailed with a photo of Clement's stone. Very surprised to see it upright! Thankfully Suffolk maintainers and weather have been kind to the Theobald plot!
I was in a cemetery yesterday where my 2x gr grandmother's stone is located and was disappointed to see it almost buried. 150 years of winter freeze are bound to wreak havoc with the ground! Fortunately a team of volunteers have recorded the inscription
Have been searching other families and just back to Medcalf fam. Certs ordered from GRO only yesterday to verify Nathan and William's dates. Will go from there on burials ... and hoping the certs have the info I need!!
