Someone on this forum has already posted an attachment with the same filename thatyou tried to use.  For example, if I tried to attach a photo "johnsmith.jpg" the chances are that someone would have already uploaded a picture with that name.

Hi Kaz8,
Today I typed for 20 minutes. Just before I pressed post I had the
brilliant idea ( Huh Huh Huh Huh) of adding a Gif. file that I put on a post
yesterday.     I too got a message saying that a file of that name already existed.
O.K. but Why Oh Why did RootsChat then make my 20 minutes of hard work
dissappear without trace. I have not retyped as it was totally spontaneous.

Also if I am typing a post and get a message that other replies have been
posted and I might wish to review, I ignore and press post when I have finished.
   Otherwise my posting dissapears.
Also Spell checking can seize up my computer so I use that only on short pieces of typing.

Hi Kaz

I have posted quite a few images and find that the best system is to name the file filenamennn, where n is any number 001 to 999. It seems to work for me.

You could call your filenames tomkin001.jpg to tomkin999.jpg or tomki9001 or whatever. Just that appending a number works for me.

Also Tomkin, a possible solution to your lost messages problem, which you've mentioned on a number of occasions, is to type up the response in Notepad and when you're happy with it, paste it into the reply box and send. if you lose it to the ether, you still have the original in Notepad.

Saying this, I only use this method when doing lookups and having to switch between various Tabs, etc.

Sorry Kaz8 for me winding Gadget up.   Her method though is very good.
The problem is, remembering whether or not you have posted something previously.

Like the notepad method I've got other things to do with my time.

I begin with my own unique ID code (in my case jdf) then the date (240905) and the time (0630) so this one would be jdf2409050630, a long number admittedly but one that is similar to the method I use to catalogue all my photo's, which is easy with a digital camera because the camera can be set to do it for you. However for rootschat or a purpose where I am unlikely to be archiving and I am in a hurry - I just go mad on the keybourd and do something like qwetilvj.

It's interesting to see what method people use to catalogue their pics ... If I am repairing / restoring for folk here on rc ,I always start the name of the pic with the  name of the rootschatter for whom I am doing the repair ...eg Cazza59 followed by a ref to the content.. eg Cazza59 gt gdad .jpg.. Then for every edition that I save ... I just add  ed1 or ed 2  etc just before the .jpg suffix ( if it's a jpg file of course Roll Eyes )  One just has to have a system that is unique to oneself...
If I dont put the rootschatters name on ..I can spend ages looking for the post that the repaired pic relates to before I can reply !At the end of each week I rename the pics to suit my filing system put them in and move them out of my pending edit folder into Finished pics folder and then burn them onto a cd ... I just cant bear to delete them all without saving them to disc first.. Gawd only knows what my kids will make of all these " ancestors " when they find them when I 'm pushing up daisies !!!
