Traveller with slippers?
« on: Sunday 24 September 06 00:02 BST (UK) »

Could anyone please tell me what "traveller with slippers" means?

It was written on the 1901 census as the occupation of my 2xgt grandfather John McGUIN b.1851. His occupation was later listed as General Hawker on the MC of my gt grandfather, Thomas Patrick McGUIN b.1882.

They lived in Huddersfield, just in case anyone recognises the names, although John was born in Bacup, Lancashire but his parents Patrick and Margaret were Irish travellers Wink

Grin Almost as good a title as " Death By Lion ".

It means he was a Travelling Salesman who dealt in carpet slippers. Reminiscent of the old music hall joke; " I'm Travelling in ladies underwear. " ( Shocked Matron!!!)
