Milngavie 1891 census-COMPLETED THANKS
« on: Sunday 24 September 06 10:27 UTC (UK) »

Frederick Alsop born 1830 England had lived in Scotland for over 30 years & was at Airy Bank, Milngavie in 1881 but in 1891 his family were all in Hertfordshire minus Fred. He is not on the English censes, was in Scotland? Does Airy Bank still exist?

Hello Kayzee,

I'm not able to answer your query but if there's not a RootsChatter in Glasgow who can assist you it might be an idea to try Glasgow Forum or alternatively try the message board on Angela Gawthrop's "Milngavie - The unofficial guide." I've just been posting some replies to family history queries that were on the board on Angela's site and mentioning RootsChat.

What about sending a message to Milngavie Library or the Library Headquarters, William Patrick Library, 2-4 West High Street, Kirkintilloch G66 1AD. You should be able to discover if Airy Bank still exists if you contact them.

Hi Kayzee,
Tried both 1891 and 1901 Census records, Dunbartonshire, Lanarkshire, Midlothian and then all Scotland, Frederick is not noted, also tried for a death record up to 110 years nothing in Scotland noted. Saw that Frederick was an artist on his 1881 Census, have you tried to search records kept on Artist files of painters, and given the period did he go to paint any of the many wars back then, Africa, India etc. Have you tried searching under any of the other family surnames for him? Sorry no great help available.
                                                               Regards,
                                                                     Dunmac.
P.S. Try emailing the Glasgow School of Art, famous at that time!

Thanks Dunmac. I have his death in Hertfordshire in 1895. It was just the 1891 census I was trying to trace him on really. I think maybe he was out painting on a mountain or moor somewhere & not enumerated. I have some detail of his paintings as he exhibited a few times in Scotland & London.
Thank you for your time.
