The attached shows extracts from the 1871 census for Langdale Street in the St Geo East area of East London. Eliz Morecock (66, Charwoman) is my Gr Gr Gr Grandmother.
Can anyone more familiar with the area attempt to clarify what the word/placename after 'Birmingham' might be?? The word 'Warwick' has been added - but is this a correction to the original?
DALBY - Suffolk and, after 1860, Birmingham. EBENEZER - Cardiganshire & Glamorgan. GARVEY and GRAHAM - Mayo. HUBBARD - Birmingham. MAUND and LEWIS - Shropshire and Birmingham. MORGAN(S) - Cardiganshire. SLADE - Somerset and Worcester.
Dave, Being a 'Brummie' I thought I might be able to help! It certainly looks like 'Frode' to me, but I have never heard it mentioned. The 'Warwick' part looks like a correction. Birmingham was a part of Warwickshire before all the changes in the 70s David
On the other entries the county is put before the place except the ones for Birmingham .......? and Hanover Germany, could this be significant? Perhaps the enumerator thought Birmingham was in foreign parts
