Hi Angela,
John was a Sawyer. He emmigrated to Australia arriving here on the Layton on 18 January 1838, they moved here specifically for John to work for the Macarthur family possibly building a manor, I did an IGI search this afternoon and he was the only Gabb to be married in Kings Stanley in that period so I'm thinking he must be from a neighbouring town where I have found a lot more Gabbs.
Thanks again and regards, Amanda

Hi Amanda
That's interesting. What a pity he didn't stay around until after the 1841 census!
I have a number of sawyers in the family too and some of them were very itinerant, so that makes sense. In my own family, it tended to be a trade passed from father to son, so if you find any more sawyer Gabbs I would think it was very promising.
Anyway - good luck with the hunt. Anything else I can look up for you, I'm more than happy
Best wishes
Angela

Hi Angela,
It makes sense that the trades were passed down, John's son William who I'm descended from was also a sawyer. I'm not sure what his other son Charles' occupation was originally, later in life he was the keeper of a toll house and he was also the first nuisance inspector for the Canterbury area in Sydney.
Thanks again for your kind help.
Best wishes,
Amanda
