Hi everyone Ive recently had a talk with my mum about here own grandmother Lizzie Slater of Scarborough. Ive managed to find the family using ancestry but theres a few questions that someone I hope might be able to help with. the first is that Lizzie's father used to be a coalman delivering all over scarborough she apparently spoke of this alot among other stories I was hoping someone might be able to confirm this by use of the census.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you
Will

Hi Will
So we might try to help:
Have you an approx DOB for Lizzie? I assume SLATER is her maiden name? Do you have her father's name?

Hi again. I believe she was born around 1897. Her fathers name was John Alfred Slater. apparently the family was very large with many children., which I have kind of confirmed as she seems to have had 4 sisters and 2 brothers.
sorry about the vagueness.
thanks for your help.

Hi Will You've confirmed the family I thought she'd be & father's occupation looks right:
1891: Scarborough Yorkshire Ecclesiastical parish:All Saints RD :Scarborough REF: Class: RG12; Piece: 3964; Folio 47; Page 10; ADDRESS : 90 Nelson Street John A SLATER 36, Coal Porter, b Esleby Norfolk Mary SLATER 31, b Brompton Yorks Dau: Eliza SLATER 11, Scholar, b Scarboro Dau: Emma SLATER 10, Scholar, b Scarboro Son: Alf'd SLATER 7 (or 9?), Scholar, b Scarboro Son: Geo' SLATER 5, Scholar, b Scarboro Dau: Mary SLATER 4, b Scarboro Dau: Maggie SLATER 2, b Scarboro Dau: May SLATER 11 mths, b Scarboro
1901: Scarborough Yorkshire Ecclesiastical parish:All Saints RD :Scarborough Class: RG13; Piece: 4530; Folio: 152; Page: 93 ADDRESS: 90 Nelson Street Head: John Alfd SLATER 46. General Carter, b Coleby Norfolk Wife: Mary SLATER 43. b Brampton Yorks Dau: Eliza 21, unm, b Scarboro Dau: Emma SLATER 19, unm, b Scarboro Son: Alf'd 17, unm, (General Carter), b Scarboro Son: George SLATER 15, (General Carter), b Scarboro Dau: Mary SLATER 13, b Scarboro Dau: Maggie SLATER 12, b Scarboro, Dau: May SLATER 10, b Scarboro Dau: Lizzie SLATER 4, b Scarboro
I think the 2 boys are supposed to be "ditto" occupation of their father in 1901; the ditto mark looks like a lowecase "z" so I'm not 100% sure on it.
Also, yhe writing is a bit poor, but it looks like John Alfred is described in 1901 as "Own A/c" - in response to question: "Employer, Worker or Own Account?"

Thanks for verifying that Ambly. Its nice to think it was maybe a family buisness. ive heard that coalmen not only were important in the victorian age but were also respected and liked so thanks for confirming this. is there any indication the family had anymore children previous to Eliza on the earlier cenusus? the family is big but to the standards of the day doesnt seem as many as i thought.
Thanks for your help again.

Hi Will
1881: Scarborough Yorkshire RD :Scarborough REF: Class: RG11; Piece: 4802; Folio: 190; Page: 110 ADDRESS:2 In Yard Mill Cottages Head: John A SLATER 25, Coal Porter, b Colby Norfolk Wife: Mary SLATER 22, b Brompton Yorks Dau: Eliza SLATER 1, b Scarbro Yorks Boarder: Joseph ROBINSON 25, marr, Labourer, b Gowland Yorks Visit: Eliza SLATER 14, Scholar, b Cloughton Yorks
Looks like Eliza is the first child, unless there is possibly one not at home or who had not survived much past birth/infancy.
There is a marriage of a John Alfred SLATER to a Mary FOSTER Scarboro 1879. (The other couple on the page are Thomas H DILLON/Sarah E SAXBY who are in 1881 Census with SAXBY inlaws)
And I believe Mary FOSTER born abt 1860 Brompton is quite visible in the 1861/1871Census for Brompton as the daughter of William (Farm Labourer, b 1814 Brompton) and Jane (b 1831 Sherburn) FOSTER - the SLATER/FOSTER marriage would first confirm if this is correct father for her.
But before this, on the SLATER side, it's getting murky!
I can't find a John Alfred SLATER b abt 1855 Col(e)by Norfolk, with or without middle name or initial - in either the 1861 or 1871, or indeed any other SLATER born in that place : except:
In 1871, I find this, which may be him just using (or Employer has used) just middle name:
1871: Wykeham Yorkshire RD :Scarborough, Sub-RD:Hutton Bushell REF: Class: RG10; Piece: 4820; Folio: 9; Page: 12; ADDRESS: Grange Serv: Alfred SLATER 15, Groom Domestic, b Colby Yorks One of a number of employees of: William HOPPER 58, Farmer of 450 Acres
And this looks like the visiting SLATER girl of the 1881 Census, in 1871:
1871: Cloughton Yorkshire RD :Scarborough REF: Class: RG10; Piece: 4818; Folio: 134; Page: 6 ADDRESS: Beck Lane Head: Samuel SLATER 40, Farm Labourer, b Engith? Norfolk Wife: Margaret SLATER 40, b Annworth Norfolk Dau: Eliza SLATER 4, b Cloughton Norfolk (sic - per ditto) Dau: Elizabeth A SLATER 1, b Cloughton Norfolk (sic - per ditto)
and Samuel's in same place in 1881:
1881: Cloughton Yorkshire RD : Scarborough REF:Class: RG11; Piece: 4806; Folio: 104; Page: 9; Line ADDRESS: 4 Beck Lane Head: Samuel SLATER 50, Quarryman, b Suffield Norfolk Wife: Margaret SLATER 49, b Hansworth, Yorks Dau: Elizabeth SLATER 10, b Cloughton Yorks Dau: Margaret SLATER 6, b Cloughton Yorks
But, then I have trouble finding even this Samuel in the 1861, thinking he may be John Alfred's father.
Maybe someone with bigger & better eyes can identify your John Alfred in 1861, and this Samuel too? The fact I can't spot either of them - perhaps name has been very mistranscribed on indexes.....

Bah!!! It always happens I think I did just find them in 1861 - mistranscribed indeed, as: STAUGHTER, and enumerated as SLAUGHTER:
1861: Colby Norfolk RD: Aylsham , Sub-RD : Buxton REF: Class: RG9; Piece: 1206; Folio: 133; Page: 3; ADDRESSL: By Suffield Road Head: Samuel SLAUGHTER 33, Ag Lab, b Ingworth Norfolk Wife: Margaret SLAUGHTER 32, b Hansworth Norfolk Son: John A SLAUGHTER 7, b Colby Norfolk Dau: Mary H SLAUGHTER 3, b Colby Norfolk Bro of Wife: Charles ROWE 25, unm, Ag Lab, b Hansworth Norfolk
So looks to me like the 14 yr old Eliza with John in 1881, is his young sister....?
"SLAUGHTER" isn't a 'mistake' - here is 1851, before any babbies came along!?
1851: Colby, Norfolk Rd: Aylsham , Sub-RD: Eynsford REF:Class: HO107; Piece: 1810; Folio: 367; Page: 8 ADDRESS: (Parish of Colby) Head: Samuel SLAUGHTER 23, Labourer, b Ingworth Norfolk Wife: Margaret SLAUGHTER 22, Labourers Wife, b Hansworth Norfolk
Despite the emergence of "SLAUGHTER" as an alternate form of the surname, Alfred SLATER in 1871 is still the closest one I can find to be your John Alfred SLATER/SLAUGHTER.
