"Peaceful Retreat" Sussex???
« on: Sunday 01 October 06 20:22 UTC (UK) »

1891 & 1901 Census show my ancestors, James and Emma Cheal living at PEACEFUL RETREAT in Sussex.  I would love to find out what it was. Was it just a house or some kind of home and more importantly does it still exist.  Any help gratefully appreciated.

Many thanks
Regards

The address seems to be Lyminster.  There are several families living there in 1901.   Have you tried local directories?    It may just have been a large house.    I think there is a Post Office site that you can search for house names and post codes so it may be worth checking that to see if it still exists.  Or ask a local estate agent.   They often know the big houses.

Problem is in this case it keeps sending me to Loeminster! Sorry

Lyminster in Sussex was often spelt Leominster!

I have a copy of an 1897 map of Wick, which was sort of next to Lyminster, but there is no Peaceful retreat on that, sorry.

Just looked at Rod's Old Maps link above, and it is the same Map as I have!
Lyminster is down as Leominster on it, and about 2 'clicks' further south just past the Locomotive ir goes on to Wick!

Sadly no Peaceful Retreat though.

Thank you one and all for trying - it just sounded such a nice place!  Rod thanks for the Maps link I'll find that useful.  Although alas not for my Peaceful Retreat!

Best wishes
